Hi all,
Does anyone know if it's possible to get MT tyres for less than $300 each?

I'm looking for 265/75R16 and have had quotes from local tyrepower for STT/BFG/Toyo/Kuhmo/Dunlop etc and all appear to be at the $300 mark.

If I go for 265/75 then I need 5 as the spare will need changing. Otherwise I may stay with the 245/65 spare and get 4 other STT to match.

Does anyone know af a more cost effective way of getting a set of muddies to play in please or do I just have to pull my head in and shell out the cash????????
Thanks
Coxy

Could get BFG muddies at Bob Jane in Fountain Gate for about $260 each in 32", which is about the same
size. What sort of dollars are the Maxxis, curious to how they go in the scrub and kays too?

Thank Christ for the cut and paste. I actually posted the below in another thread and have added it here. Hope it helps.

"I'm also in the market for a new set of tyres. I'm one of those geeks who spends a lot of time doing research on something I intend buying. The same goes with tyres. It's a big expenditure so the more something costs, the more time I spend researching it.

With tyres it's really going to be a personal thing and no matter what others say, it's your decision what you end up buying. I've read a lot of tyre forums but only one thing really counts. Independent and unbiased testing. With all the research I've done, I've come to one conclusion. The bigger name brands aren't always the best. Sure, people are going to swear by this brand or that brand. You'll hear all sorts of recommendations about BFG, Goodyear, Dunlop, Cooper etc.

For my next set of tyres, I'm opting for some of the smaller and lesser known brands of tyres. These include Nexen, GT Radial, Hercules and Federal. Now before you all jump on my back and yes, I'm expecting a lot of criticism but from my research, the above brands are as good if not better than some others costing twice as much.

All the tyres I've named are made in Asia but which tyres aren't these days. They are owned or have been owned by some of the world's biggest tyre companies like Continental or Michelin and some are actually made in the same factory as some of the name brand tyres with the same quality controls.

You can often get a set of 5 tyres for around $1000 fitted and balanced!

So before parting with $1500.00 for some new tyres, it might be worth checking out some other brands. You might be pleasantly surprised and save yourself a LOT of dollars."

Paying $235 at TTF in Dandy for 265/75R16. Plan is to get 4 new ones and try and find a second hand as a spare.

Not too bad but still off my price range. But the Big Horns are bloody good tyres and worth the money.

Bighorns are a good tyre for the price, but not suited to many cars. They don't go too well in soft sand when fitted to a hilux, whereas BFG's or Bridgestones will.

I've pulled out 3 cars with bighorns......2 hilux's & a Pajero.

There is also a Hercules Terra Trac M/T. Not an aggressive tread as the ones above but only around $150 fitted and balanced. Another high quality tyre. You don't have to spend big to get something decent. All the above tyres have got great user and expert reviews. Worth checking out for your next set.

Top tyre. About $187 fitted and balanced from several dealers in Victoria. You might have to ring around but they're available.

Just had a set of bfg muddies fitted today 265/70 16 paid $280 each fitted and balanced.

That's almost $100 more per tyre than the Nexens. Poor *******s like me have to shop bargain basement and the Nexens are right on the money as far as quality and value are concerned.

I'm getting a set of 5 Nexen mud tyres fitted and balanced for under $1000. A set of 5 BFG's would be $1400 at $280 each. I'd rather keep the $400 I would spend on the BFG's in my pocket rather than give it to the tyre company. They make enough money without me making them richer than what they are already.

I've got the 4 new ones coming and picked up a second hand spare muddie from Just used tyres in Dandenong for $65 balanced and fitted with 50% tread left on it. didn't want to spend big bucks on something to sit underneath and it's good enough to get me out of
sh!t and home if needed
