Motorhome trip to the outback help

Gday everyone.

We are thinking up a long road trip out to Alice springs via Tiboburra - Camerons Corner then back to Sydney via Coober Pedy - Lake Eyre. Since there'll be long distances and theres about 6 of us and a dog and a cat, and as stupid as it may sound to some of you, we are looking to do it in a rental motorhome. The Subaru is coming along too so the motorhome we'd rent wont be overly huge (and $$ at that) to fit us all.

So my question is, can this be done? Can we tackle the outback roads (if they are actually dirt roads not little tracks) in a motorhome if there even is a road to and from the aformentioned locations. 4wd only? Also can we drive a motorhome (that sleeps 4) on a standard C classs licence? If there isnt a way in a motorhome, whats the next best way?

These parts of Aus we have no idea how to traverse exactly so any feeback and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you can drive anything on a 'C' class licence as long as the GVM isnt over 4.5T or seating up to 12 Adults. its on the back of your licence. so pretty much you would have to call around who hires them out and see what they have ago that would suit your needs.

Yeah thanks NIAL8R, im on my red p's so its not on my licence, the motorhome driver would be my dad who isnt available right now and wont be for a while....anyhow, will buy a map and check this out....

Mate I did Alice to Sydney in a work truck 2003, Coober Pedy - passed Lake Eyre - Port Augusta - through the Flinders to Broken hill - Sydney, never drove on any dirt.

You did mention Camerons Corner (Easy) then Sydney VIA Coober Pedy - There is a lot of dirt between Camerons Corner & Coober Pedy. The dirt roads between the two are not bad IF IT DOESN'T RAIN!

I would have a talk with the hire company as to the route you want to take & see what they think.

Motorhome or not

Hi all, I would think you could get to Cameron's Corner from your side but to come across to Alice the Simpson Desert might be out depending on what vehicle you choose. You might have to drive down the eastern side of SA and then work your way across to the Oodnadatta Track at Maree before heading north. The Track is certainly traversible by 2wds most of the time but lately the northern part of SA and southern NT have had a lot of rain so I'm not sure what nick it is in at the moment.

As suggested by someone else I'd certainly be talking to the hire companies as they have some weird conditions on where you can take their vehicles.

Other than that it sounds like a real adventure for you all.

Thanks billolga & aussieranger. Will get onto that.
So we got the map out and drew up a way. Syd to Bourke up to Mt Isa then to Tennant Creek down to the Alice. Visit Uluru and such go back down the way Vegetoast mentioned past Lake Eyre although detour Port Pirie then to Camerons corner. From there across to Lightning Ridge, Moree then back to syd.
Totalling 7574 clicks (without counting in drive from alice uluru and surrounds nor sidetrips), 3 weeks worth, less dirt than originally thought. Sounds way too full on but seems to be the best way we could come up with (at the moment).
Alternativly rent a 4by and cut alot out but we do have 2 pets with us plus it would mean needing a motel at the end of the day.

Hmm....

Boarding kennels for the pets, tents and gear on top of the fourby, maybe even hook up a box trailer?
Problem solved.:D

Boarding kennels, parents wouldnt even think of that hence why theyre coming along! Theyve tagged along on trips since we had them. Thanks anyways :) Tents and gear for those of us who arent sleeping in the motorhome are going in the soob which now will most defiantly be coming along (still a while away so nothing is 100% set in stone), gotta start upgrading, fixing and installing stuff :D (wallet wants to explode)

Anyhows, dad and i found the best motorhome for our needs, theres just the issue of not being allowed on unsealed roads unless its less than 12kms to a camp ground. Theres a 400kms odd stretch that we need to take between Tiboburra and Bourke...

Anyone know if theres a company out there without the unsealed rule? A long shot but....
