Anyone done monkey gum recently. Any comment on track conditions? Am thinking of leading a group but want to ensure min standards of vehicles are met ie how rutted, is lift required etc

Hey mate i believe youre talking about monkey gum in yalwal?
I know ifs rigs that are twin locked on 33s that have done it and other solid axle patrols that are 35s open diffs

Iif you got something like this it shpuld be too bad weather dependant and the right recovery gear.

What rig do you have amd how set up is it?

Hi barra. I have an ifs on 33 with a rear locker and 2 inch lift. Rest of potential crew has less modified rigs.

Depending on weather conditions and experience and the way you drive they most probably will struggle.

We are due back up that way in late jan as we are doing 6 stages

With some packing in a couple of spots and careful driving any dual cab ute should be able to get up Monkey Gum when it's dry. Just have to watch your sills if you don't have sliders. There are alternative lines around most of the gnarlier bits.

If it's wet it will be a different story.

I was watching some footage on youtube that was about a group of cars that did monkey gum about a month ago.. It looks like it can be technical , and yes if your off line or its wet Panel Damage in on the cards...
If your doing a over night trip..... the camping down at the dam is good. (and free). we stopped at a small camp site at the T intersection over looking the dam... No toilets at, that camp site.... but they are only a short walk away.
I was going to do monkey gum when we were there for the long weekend..... But no one else that was in our group / trip with us wanted to try .
That footage on youtube? I just typed in.... monkey gum 2019.... and looked for the latest footage..

Me and my mates will usually do it as a night run once a month or so. When its just the boys with the more modified rigs it will be done and dusted in under an hour. Last time we had friends with fairly stock standard dual-cabs and just took things nice and slow with plenty of spotting.

No damage, no recoveries but its definitely not something id recommend for a first-timer. If you take your time you should not have a problem, just be prepared to get out and spot for the people in your crew. If it's wet I wouldn't bother unless your lifted muddies and a locker, some spots are super slippery.

Once you make it to the top avoid the bog holes at all cost ahaha seen so many cars stuck with water above the gearstick

The only question i have is how does one know when they are at the end of each stage... ?

I'd split Monkey Gum into two sections, the bottom section with big ruts and lines around the trickier parts. Then the top section which has a few rocky parts with less options (although there's still an easier line at the really big rock steps). There's a flat section with motorbike whoops about halfway up between the two sections. All the big bog holes are on the firetrail heading back out to Braidwood Rd, well past the lookout at the top of the climb.

I think you're confusing it with 6 stages?
Nah, he's on the money, it has 2 different parts. 6 Stage pretty much has 6 different sections. I never hear of anyone doing "dusty's" anymore, I think thats what its called.

6 stage (Blackwood Rd) is the track off to the left at the bottom of Monkey Gum, totally different beast. Ridden up there plenty of times on my dirtbike but would never take my car near it.

Thanks for that, i had a look at the beginning of monkey gum when i was there. Drove though the creek bed and went up that small incline to were i think you mean. Seeing i was by myself and it was late afternoon, thought it best to head back to camp.... That was last long weekend. I tried to get at least one other from our camp to go back next morning and i had no luck...
So i will keep an look out for a up coming trip to go back , If no one puts up a trip?.. i will put a trip on , but cant do it till late Nov / Dec Kids have some dance comps on and not going to know when i can put trip on till they finish. if they get though the finals next step is state.. so i cant put up a date till that is over.
Like i said Thanks again.

Hey mate, Id be more than happy to go down for a run but will be steering clear of 6 stage. Been up there a long time ago and isn't something id be keen on putting my bronco through these days I only go up on the bike, my old Hilux had a twin-stick setup, 37s lockers , beadlocks ect and I still copped a bit of panel damage.

Monkey gum is still a nice challenging track and something that as long as your careful you will get through without any pannel damage, when you hit the creek you just cross it and keep following the main track, usually people looking for six-stage go straight past it as its a bit tucked away, it was more than likely you were looking at monkey gum.

If you get through the gum alright can go have a look at middle earth, mini gunshot, dusties and a whole bunch of other good tracks out there
