Hi Mikee. I had a 98 XJ Cherokee Diesel 5 Speed Manual and loved it. One of the better off road vehicles I have had. Cheap to buy, cheap to mod, but expensive for parts. In saying that, you can pick up a well modified XJ Cherokee petrol or diesel for under 10K.

i have a cherokee. It depends which model you after. The new kk 's are a great price atm but i think they are sooo ugly. I have a KJ which is i believe from 2000 till 2007. Its great on road i average 8 litres 100km. The previous model to that is the best off road but is very thirsty. They would be awesome as a second car to take off road on weekends tho i think too expense as a daily driver.

G'day Mike.
I have a 1996 Cherokee which I picked up in Melbourne for 5k. Cheap car but great value for money and so far (2 years later) has not cost me very much other than regular services etc and an upgraded water pump.
I was a landrover owner before the Jeep but did a bit of research into what i wanted from a 4x4 and the jeep is what I came up with. Alot of people reckon that the Jeeps are fuel drinkers, but I have found that if you take it easy off the lights you can get good mileage from them no problem.
Cant praise it enough off road and on actually. I would say that as an all round vehicle, its the best i have ever owned.
Hope this helps!
cheers

A couple of friends have Jeep Grand Cherokee the old box shape and are happy with them. No major issue I have heard off.
