Hi all,

Looking to go for a camping adventure in a few weeks time and am looking to go for a run around the lithgow area to take a look at all the good spots like the glow worm tunnel and the lost city. Going to start out at lake lyell and make my way around with a few mates. Just wanted to know if anyone could point me in the direction of some detailed track notes from one campsite to the next on as many 4wd tracks as possible that cover all the great points of interest.

hi mate,mt walker/lake Lyell is a good day out in it's self, I'd stay away in wet weather, happy to show you a few places, in nicer weather, as for glow worm tunnel, on a good day, you can do it in a 2wd, not much camping, but at Newnes camp ground, personally, I'd rather Mt walker, more secluded... if you find the right places...

P.S What are you driving?

In Newnes State Forest you can camp anywhere you like that isn't an active logging area. The main campground (Bungleboori) is a big grubby and very busy with trail bikes on weekends.

As for tracks just explore Mt Walker heaps of tracks. The tracks to Glow Worm Tunnel are pretty easy to follow.

Best advice I can give you is spend $10 and buy some topos for the area. There is so many tracks.

Thanks for the advice will be getting the hema topo for orange Bathurst & lithgow unless anyone can suggest any better topos? I'm driving a Wrangler JK Rubicon Russman76 with no additional mods. Plan on doing a 4 day trip from lake lyell and travel around Capertee, Ben Bullen, Newnes Plateau and Wolgan Valley. Found an online PDF with basic details of some 4wd tracks and bush walking tracks around the area attached below if anyone was interested.

Just make sure the maps your getting arnt 1:250,000 scale :D

Your probably wanting maps more like 1:25,000 scale or less to show the tracks (you probably already know this but I thought I should mention it incase)

I got some maps from "state forests" for the barrington tops around the $10 mark - if its state forest out that way (?) perhaps thats also a cheap option for those areas

Thanks for mentioning that prawns, you can never have too many reminders :D Does anyone know where I can find a detailed 25k topo map for Lithgow and surrounds? Would be a good place to start planning this trip to get a rough idea of what tracks to explore and places to camp when it gets a little dark.

Hi mate if your heading up to capertee go and have a look at the turon river the road into this place is only a few hundred metres out of town turn left on turon gates rd then left again you can't get lost or if you have more time head into sofala or hill end plenty of camping and driving to be had .... I wrote a trip report on sofala ....Pete

You can buy maps from Topographic maps - Land and Property Information

I'm pretty sure the Lithgow Information centre sells them too. Contact Us - Lithgow Visitor Information Centre
