Late model Pajero comparison

HI guys, I am looking at upgrading to a Pajero in the next 6 months. I previously had a fully kitted ML Triton but sold it to downgrade, now I can upgrade again, I want something different than the triton and thinking a Pajero. I see that the NS and NT Pajeros have different engine stats, 127KW compared to 146KW and 343NM compared to 441Nm. Can anyone tell me more about the differences between the two models both aesthetically and mechanically? I assume a totally new engine was put in for the NT model release?

Any comments would be great. I am looking at spending $20-$25k on one and will slowly add mods over time.

Thanks!

Theres some great value Paj's out there atm. Auctions are good!

(I know that does not answer your question but hey, encouragement is always a good thing! LOL)

Thanks Flanders. Yeah havent looked at auctions yet, but lots on carsales. Even a 2010 auto GL with under 120k on it for $21k.

When I bought my NT I first test drove the NS Pajero. Was not going to buy it, engine noise on a brand new vehicle was crazy. Tested the NT Pajero and as soon as I started it I noticed the difference.

Aesthetically not much different between the two, maybe a Grill but that's about it. Interior is quieter, less rattles etc
Mechanically the NT has a new auto g/box, the engine is the same 4M41 but they've modified the head and possibly used a different turbo? Can't remember the exact details... Troublesome DPF has been changed and eventually removed on later models. I think servicing the early model auto NT's required "low ash" oil... Every 45k tappets should be adjusted
Fuel Economy would be 8-9L/100km
Towing NT 3ton vs NS 2.5ton

Things to watch out for
- Rust in tops of rear passenger doors
- Couple of guys with NT's have had their oil coolers fail, leaking oil into the cooling system

Things to do if you buy one
- Replace top timing chain guide (every 100,000km) and tensioner (150,000km)

What I've broken on mine
- EGR motor failed at 130,000km?
- Rear wheel bearing failed 150,000km
- CV joint at 180,000km
- Had rust in rear doors, was "fixed" but has come back in one

Thanks for that Eman. Yeah I reckon the later models have the VGT (turbo) which might account for some of the increased power and torque. Great points for me to watch out for too. I am hoping to get one with reasonably low km as I do about 40000km per year so will rack them up quickly.

Know the feeling, I do around that many km's per year, currently at 185,000km
Are you looking for an auto or manual?

Power wise yeah it should get up there with a Chip & Exhaust. But in saying that you still have to watch fro the DPF issues oh and the inlet manifold, older models would have theirs clog up one of the sensors sending it into limp mode, was fixed by upgrading to the NT inlet manifold under warranty.
I did have a chip on mine but removed it as the SCV couldn't handle it, once I replace that the chip should work fine.

What is thie DPF issue? It seems the NT straight from factory is loads more powerful but a chip and exhaust would be unreal. I want an auto as I do a lot of city driving, but also Im a lazy bugger. I need to go 4wdriving in winter, and tow a ski boat in summer.

Sorry that was all about the DPF differences in the NT. Any model is good for a chip

While on the subject of NS series, kind of on the subject! I'm casually looking at this model, upgrading from a Forester , going to be looking at the petrol version as my sums seem to work out that this would suit our driving more, and as mentioned already in this thread it seems these can be picked up at a reasonable price. Can anyone give me any feed back on these vehicles? My family is growing to a third child so we would like the extra room.

I have the NS petrol. I actually prefer the petrol (call me crazy)..they're cheap'n'chearfull. If a part breaks on them, they cost hundreds, not thousands to fix. At the end of its life, a rebuild will cost $5k, not $10+k.

The 3.8L v6 they put in the NS and NT is a very good motor. A bit agricultural, but reliable. It reaches its peak torque (330NM..not ground breaking, but plenty) at 2700 or so RPM..so nice and low for a petrol. It'll spin freely up to 6500RPM, so you can hold a low gear on a long hill climb and not run out of puff if you want to pick the speed up. Fuel economy...well if you put mud tyres on and do a lift, you'll be going through 15-16/100k. A lot of guys run gas to give extra range.

I love the traction control on the Paj. Just give a bit of acceleration if you lift a wheel or lose traction, and TC kicks in. braking that wheel and transferring the power/torque to the other wheel. Works a treat.

Complaints, and this is for all 4 gen Pajeros, I hate those dinky sides steps (mine are starting to turn into bananas) and the rear bumper, which acts as a sand/mud scoop. I've lost count of the times I've bent mine up coming out of a ditch. There are aftermarket solutions to these two.

Can i do an exhaust change on my 08 ns paj to a nt full exhuast? Do i have to modify anything to make it work? I've seen a secondhand one cheap with 5000kms
