Have heard there is a track up through the high country, from th Lake William Hovel area (Cheshunt) up past the Huts... Has anyone done this track? if so do we know what it's called? whether it's in good condition? is it worth doing (i'm 99% sure it is). Would love to get up that way before Christmas or soon after.

Yes , it's called the Buckland spur track and in places it can be quite a steep climb allright, low range 1st gear in spots, in the dry , lethal in the wet, stay on it until you come onto No.3 road and that takes you up to No. 3 Refuge Hut . Back track a little bit and go down Westons Track to Pineapple flat, a great camping spot . There is no camping at lake William Hovel so find a spot before hand .

Yeah, stayed on the side of the King River last time i was up there, great trout fishing! I'll have to find out where the track leaves the William Hovel area from. Thanks Bushnut.

Continue up past the lake on the Upper King River Road , that then becomes the Top Crossing track, turn right onto Buckland Spur track, stay on that until you reach No.3 road and then turn left .

A very good tool is Google Earth ( free Down load ) you can even plot your GPS points with it !
