Aftermarket Welch plugs ARE brass, genuine are steel, brass to me brass is a better standard than steel and available at your local parts shop.
The amount of force you need to bash them in, only really really really really shonky ones will not do the job.

Number ONE welch plug sealant = Stag !!

yes, drop the gearbox, flywheel and bash one in with a FBH and socket neatly fit inside the rim of the cup, coat the leading edge in copious amount of STAG

removal = ram a screwdriver in it, and lever it out
