June long weekend - Back of Burra

A few of us are thinking about a trip from Burra Gorge on a Saturday morning about 7.00am up through the hills north of Burra to Lillydale sheep station, and then across to the Dangalli and Chowilla Conservation Parks.

The plan is to camp in the Dangalli park on Saturday night, and then trek further down on Sunday to have a look through the wetlands of the Chowilla creeks and lake system. There are three main routes to return home - down the tarmac to Karoonda and Murray Bridge, down this same road, but turn west at Mindarie and cut across some nice back tracks to the little village of Copeville, then across to Mannum. And of course straight back along the Sturt Highway.

I was originally thinking about doing this on the October long weekend, but am just throwing it up for discussion at the moment for the June long weekend instead. I was thinking that October is a long time to wait. Also the weather can be a bit windy at that time of the year, and from what I experienced yesterday when I did a quick run around the tracks, I think the middle of winter on a nice sunny day would be ideal for enjoying this pretty rugged country. On the other hand a bit of wind can blow the dust away between the vehicles. There are few patches of shallow bull-dust! Main thing is just to keep a good km or so gap between the cars.

The other plus about planning for a June trip is that if the skies let loose and the area is full of muddy tracks, or if the forecast is for a lot of rain on the day, we can cancel and put it back to October.

But that's only four weeks notice, and some might have already made plans for June, or commited their fuel money to other things. About 1000km of driving costs.

Their are three groups interested at the moment I think, so if those three could let us know if June 11 ( Friday night at Burra Gorge ), 12th and 13th are OK with them. Of course, being a long weekend, it could be Saturday 12th at Burra Gorge, Sunday to Dangalli and Monday Chowilla and home. But then you miss out on a quiet day at home on Monday to recover! But might be prefferable to missing out on your Friday evening recovery after a hard week at work.

So - Is June long weekend OK. And if so - Friday arvo get away, or Saturday? Same alternatives of course if you prefer October. Let's see who wants what from the three original 'starters', and then we can fix the dates.

Please feel free to comment on whether it would be good to include a bit of driving through the Sunset Country late Sunday and Monday morning. That would make the most of the long weekend. If any in the group might think that is too much for them, it is an easy option to turn for home at Renmark, and the others head further east. But it also means that it needs to be a start on Friday night at Burra Gorge.

Hey Millsy now you have made me think hard about what I want to do on the June long weekend, go fishing or go 4wding. I will have to ask some one if they want to go on the trip or go fishing. then I will have to go shopping for more camping gear. Any way I have to pack my bag I am off to Balcoona tomorrow for work what a hard life I live.

Hey Shane, do you mean Balcanoona?

Millsy, it would be better suited to us to do October mate, but if the others want June then we will be no goer's.

Good ground work you have done, that's a fair few K's just to have a look.

Good one Stinky. Just waiting to work out whether its June or October. Hang around and hopefully we will have a date soon. At this stage I am suggesting the June long weekend might be prefferable weather wise, but we will see what Wilkat, Shane and Geoff say before pinning it down. It might not be clear cut and some-one might miss out this time.

Am also looking at a trip out to the Sunset Country at some stage. Less farm roads involved and more 4x4 tracks. Friday night camping just south of Glossop in the Katarapko Conservation Park. A very nice annabranch off the Murray ( a creek running from and then back into the Murray). Then Saturday cruising some tracks around the Murray Sunset park, and northern part of the Big Desert. Some nice camp spots between the Nhill/Murrayville Road and the Border Track apparently. Sunday could do the top half of the Border Track and home after that.

Be good to do this one before the warm weather starts.

Thanks Geoff. I think Shane is still deciding and we are waiting for Wilkat to get back. I see what you mean - it was a bit short notice.

Millsy I have asked the other person with me last weekend and she wants to go fishing. So October is better for us as it gives me more time to get some gear together for camping and some money saved for the trip. So we will be going to Wallaroo for the long weekend in June mate fishing and exploreing the area.

Sounds like fun Shane.

So that settles it, we will do the Burra to Dangalli trip in October if all goes well. I have just put up another trip suggestion up for August 20, 21 and 22 if you are interested in sandy adventure before the October trip.

OK people I reckon we have settled on the October long weekend for the Back of Burra trip. See the first post for details.

Still not decided at this stage whether we meet at Burra Gorge on the Friday evening or the Saturday evening, as explained at the bottom of post #1.

So the dates will be either Friday 1st at Burra Gorge, Sat 2nd to Dangalli, Sun 3rd Chowilla and for those who want to - some of the Sunset tracks. Mon a few more tracks and then home.

Or, the other alternative, if people feel that heading up to Burra Gorge on Friday night is all too hard - Saturday afternoon/evening at Burra Gorge, Sunday to Dangalli Concervation Park north of Renmark, and then Monday a look through the Chowilla Wetlands. Then home.

We can decide on which of these over the next 10 weeks I guess.

I will open a new thread to save confusion!

No worries WIlkat. Hopefully you have a good run between now and then ( August and October ). Managing finances is a bit like driving - you never know what's around the corner!
