I am cured. No more modifications.

After a lot of soul searching, I have seen the light. I no longer really need any more mods.

I have taught myself that I have the best Troopy in Australia. I know, I know, the deniers will not believe me, but it is true. Any more mods will undo my initial purpose of the vehicle…the most flexible daily driver that is MTB accommodated, and is sexy as hell.

This addiction nearly resulted with me contemplating putting a deposit down for a real truck (not a fake F or Ram wannabe). My psychiatrist Dr Lecter said he may be a murderous cannibal, but I was even worse with my disc brake mod contemplation. He said I had no shame.

Time to put that money towards another holiday. Memories are what matters.

This is day 1 of the recovery process. Many more days to come.

I would be happy to share with you my secret to enlightenment. Feel free to drop me a line and I’ll provide you with the details where you can make the monthly deposit. Let me guide you through this mental health pandemic.

Have a good weekend all

Praise Jesus thine one true Saviour!

I prayed for thou soul, unto our Lord and saviour thus I spake [quite loudly at times] for his blessings upon your soul. And I prayed unto our lord and saviour even louder to save me from temptation, the devil hath possessed mine soul and was tempting me to track you down and cast his hell fires amongst your most treasured possession!

Lettuce all now pray for our dear brothers countenance

A Men..

joshinthecity had posted the Recaro Expert M seats recommendation as a temptation (https://4x4earth.com/forum/index.php?threads/recaros-in-a-70-just-do-it.51143/#post-703455).

This is the go straight to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200 (instead pay $6K) ultimate sin.

I have deciphered the code.

Nearly got me on the Recaros in November. Once you go down the dark path you may never come back.

I had the Expert M’s in my last cruiser and so far have resisted the temptation to get them again. They are super comfy on long trips though

Surprised that you didn’t keep the Recaro seats (remount the OEM seats when you got rid of your old cruiser).

Probably not worth the hassle with possibly needing new brackets and engineering for the new car.

I thought about it but the wife was happy with the stock seats for now. My son has my old cruiser so left them for him

4WD mod hell (=any national 4WD show). Never ever visited the place. But it would burn your wallet and soul.

The only reason one would go is to buy more mods. Like a casino for gamblers with addiction.

Ha, your wife is your mod saving angel. History showed that you bought it, and were tempted again, but your angel influenced you back to the light. That’s what angels do “influence”. You know you don’t really make the decisions :)

The reality is that a lot of people review from old vehicles when the new upgraded versions are better. I saw a YouTube video of someone who upgraded their 4WD (new) with brake pads and slotted rotors, and barely noticed any difference.

I sometimes think that 4WD mods are like what Barbie+accessories are to girls. So long as you enjoy it then it’s all good.

If you have specific gear to buy you’ll save money. I showed up with a fridge trolley back in 2007 with the purpose of buying an evakool fridge. I saved a couple of hundred, got some free accessories, and plenty of exercise. That fridge is still in this ute.
The trick is not walking away from the show with a shopping list bigger than you walked in with. If you work that out let me know haha.

Surely your troopy is begging to have an 8 speed auto installed...
Nope. I enjoy driving a manual. I was a bit hesitant initially, after having not driven a manual for 5yrs+, but the low end torque makes it an absolute joy to drive. I am the master of my domain (and my gears).

You will soon change that, it will be when the lust for more power takes over because in reality you mention torque but the 70 has insignificant amounts, anything less than about 600nm and 200 kw is simply in not enough to make for a fun drive then the constant clutch replacements or yet another upgrade is mandatory

It is interesting how 450NM an 150Kw was considered more than ample, till about 10 years ago when highly strung 4 cylinder engines started to come out. Their torque band is only a few hundred RPM wide but looks great on paper. Whereas something like the 70 has the whole torque band from about 1100 RPM to 2600 ( or something like that), plus lower gearing. At the right gear it has more torque at the wheel for 4wding than most new 4wds.

Many will remember the Patrol 4.2 vs 3.0. The 3 litre had the edge on paper but owners all said the 4.2 was a better performing vehicle. Owners had to rev the shit out of the higher torque 3l with its egg beater engine to get it in the narrow torque band.

The single biggest problem with the 70 is that many owners buy it for reasons other than what it was designed. They add mods, weight, tow massive vans and guess what, they need more power, then a stronger clutch then wider back wheels, then chipping, then an auto. then lord knows what. Some people even add cup holders.

It's a credit to the 70 that it has been versitile, but chasing power and trying to change the purpose of the design is an expensive process. I would never buy a second hand chipped / ECU'd vehicle based on the issues I've seen.

They are a torquey lazy motor much like a tractor. I love the manual box and wouldn’t consider changing to auto. I have driven a variety of different cars and the 70 is right up there for driver satisfaction . Sure there are plenty of things that could be better though.

I have driven a 70 for 300,000 k so far and still puts a smile on my face.

I find it amazing that a 70 could ever be considered a 'daily driver'
I guess so if your daily drive is a constant outback tour/holiday, involves large distances on dirt, carrrying a heap of tools to rough places, farming, inspecting power lines, heavy plant maintenance, etc.

You’d be amazed.

Compared to a Hyundai Imax people mover, the LC78 is much narrower, and length is comparable. The LC78 has less length behind the front seats, but the big V8 bonnet sticks out further than the Imax. The height is taller but that really does not impact daily driving (only indoor parking at some places). Turning circle is marginally bigger that the Imax, but really, it is so easy to drive in the city. The narrowness of the LC78 makes it easy to navigate tight car parks. The engine tractability means rare stalls.

Parking cameras is a must for any vehicle. The Imax had parking cameras stock and the LC78 parking camera mod inclusions make it the same.

The LC78 is a better daily drive than an Imax. Probably better that the 2011 Volvo XC60 (which was a rubbish vehicle). Yes, this is from direct ownership.

Too many ‘journalists’ just like to harp up on the non-impactful points. It makes for interesting reading.

Comments about the uncomfortable seats are unfounded (we’re talking about current models, not something old from the 80’s mines that have been shredded).

The rear track makes no difference for most driving (for sand it would make a difference as rear jumps from side to side on tracks).

The vehicle loaded up vs unloaded…nearly drives identical. You can feel the extra weight when loaded, but the performance is not dissimilar. Like a truck.

The steering has been perfectly straight and hasn’t needed an alignment. Potholes and speed humps do not mess with the steering alignment (Volvo sucked and the Imax as well -see a pebble = alignment requirement).

Every vehicle has limitations. LC78 city driving is not one of them.
