How to glue vinyl and foam onto wood

Hi, asking for a friend who's setting up the back of a Troopy as a sleeping/living area.

They have wooden fittings, then they need to put foam rubber over the wooden fittings then vinyl on top of the foam rubber.

What's the right type of glue for that? Do they need two different kinds, one wood->foam and another for foam->vinyl?

TIA

I have found the spay adhesive to be pretty useless, get a pot of contact adhesive and brush it on , don’t leave it to thick , ensure it’s a clean surface and let it dry off, use a heat gun if it’s cold and damp, then use a staple gun to secure the edges on the underside where the carpet wraps around the wood

Yeah, i used a carpet glue that i picked up on EBAY, you paint it on, let it dry clear and then stick the foam/carpet to it. Much better (and cheaper) than the spray on adhesives that my mate did a similar project with and used 4 times as much glue

I used Sika spray on contact adhesive. Easy enough to do for the foam to the board. I believe the vinyl over the foam is just a stretch fit and staple at the back rather that glue from what I have seen but I am no coach builder.

The spray ones are fine as long as you get enough product on and it doesn’t just get absorbed by the fabric which is where the gel or liquid ones that are thicker will naturally sit more on the surface
Another easy option which I have done is to use liquid nails ( which in essence is contact adhesive) in a cartridge and spread with a fine adhesive spreader comb
Depending how you are doing it but a staple gun might be a more suitable fixing method

Yes, lounge suites aren't glued at all, I would glue the foam to the wood, but not the vinyl to allow a bit of slip, will make it easier to staple the edges without it pulling in one direction or another

The manufacturer of all the glues, adhesives etc usually have a customer information phone number or email address on their products. Contact them and you will get all the information you need.

Yep agreed. Back in the school days of woodworking (about 45 years ago), we made foot stools with a foam insert and vinyl covering. The foam doesn't really need to be glued to the wood, but it may be useful in an application that gets a lot of movement. The vinyl was definitely stapled to the wood. FYI - that foot stool is still going strong, so there's the proof. Have a check of how it's done on YouTube - maybe even insert a bead around the edges to give it a better finish and improve wear.
