How necessary are winches?

If money is no object, and you want the best electric Jeep winch I suggest the Smittybilt 12000 lb 97412 XRC GEN2 Winch-12000 Pound Load Capacity. Jeep Electric Winch With Waterproof Synthetic Rope. This is one of the most powerful electric Jeep winches WARN makes. It is super expensive but it is hands down one of the best winches you can purchase for your Jeep Wrangler.

Hmm as i see Warn Winches price make up
1. Chinese manufacturer gets paid for making
2. Warn USA get a commission from Aussie distributor
3. Iveco take a slice ( would think Iveco would be getting them from the Chinese factory directly, if not add another expense for additional freight)
4. ARB get the lions share
= over priced, under warranted winch o_O
Smitty winches i dont think have any presence in Australia, only reference i saw was that a local Jeep Supplier was importing them direct from the States and new stock will be north of $1200+

on the subject - blokes that run rear winches, how do u mount them if u have a wagon (ie no tray at the back). thinking maybe a set up where u slip the winch (mounted on a bracket) into the hitch receiver on the towbar with maybe additional mounting points. be a nice bit of insurance to carry a cheapy winch to strap on when needed just in case u need to pull yourself out backwards, especially if like me u do plenty of solo trips

I have a Smithy built Gen2 X20 10000lb in my Triton, got it from ARB after getting a very good price from a WA supplier but ARB wouldn't fit it if it came from someone else.
ARB dropped the price to match the other supplier as long as they got their coin from the install.

The main reason I got my winch was I am usually the only vehicle when travelling with my mates so there is no one to get you out of the shite if your stuck, I also recommend treds/trax as well.

cheers boobook they certainly look the goods, not much cheaper than a cheap electric winch though (of course theres a bit of additional work to set up the electric)

Think of it this way, mmmm I am stuck, steep slippery hill, because you never need to winch on flat ground, I think I will winch back out a bit, yep thats the best option. mmmm now I have to get my 25kg winch and bracket out of the back of the car and connect it to the tow bar all on the same steep slippery slope...
What could possibly go wrong?
I did consider the option years ago but its just not practical , permanently rear mounted is the only viable option IMO, after 15 years of 4wding still haven't had to ever winch backward so unless I build a comp truck I won't bother

fair point discomatt, more thinking about getting out backwards out of a boghole, rather than getting in deeper (by going forward), have one specific instance in mind where on a very narrow track (basically just wider than the car) i got badly bogged & didnt want to winch deeper into it.

Only ever needed one once heading down a steep track in clay when i realised i was in trouble wrangled the Hilux into a culvert on the side of the track, radioed a member to stay back, had to tie his vehicle off to a tree to get me out... Fun and games...

If you can get your head around this concept, it is a good get out of jail card. I carry 3 snatch blocks and ditched the extension strap for extension rope partly in case I need to do this.

I will give you a good tip that will save your 4wd from a slow and expensive death, don't drive into bog holes, full stop end of story.
Seriously they take no skill, no driver or car ability and after you get stuck in one and stuff your car no fun.
