Good evening everyone, just wanted to mention that i replaced my timing belt today on my Toyota Hilux 2.8l diesel, along with the water pump, tensioner, idler gear, crank seal and cam seal!!!! I wanted to share a link with you all that i found extremely useful in order to carry out this replacement!

Timing Belt

It also has a link to a water pump replacement only, and also a PDF link to the manual with crank pulley bolt torque setting. It does say for the surf, but it is the same engine as mine and helped a great deal.

Hope this helps anyone that was also seeking info on this and intending to replace there T.belt etc, as this was the best information i found, it doesn't mention the replacement of the seals...but there rather straight forward once your in there and worth doing!

Looking at the link, and suggestions, i did take out my radiator, as it doesn't take long and it gives you so much more room to play with, especially if things are tight, and i certainly needed the extra room as i needed to use a puller tool to get my crank pulley off!!!

Overall, the job isn't that bad, just give yourself plenty of time to do it, i took my time, and was prepared for hitting trouble :) but happy that everything went smoothly and one more thing ticked off the to do list!

:) Happy to answer any questions :)

Been replacing timing belt on same motor and didn't mark fuel injector cog placement while crank pully and cam cog were lined up on marks. Any help with fuel injector cog alignment would be much appreciated thanks.

Hi peter
I'm looking at doing my timeing belt water pump and found some kits on eBay for around $100.

Not sure weather I will do it myself or get a mechanic to do it for me. Just seams like a big job but the cost of a mechanic scares me lol. Just hit 300k so gotta do it

Will let you guys know when I do it

The fuel cog moves to the right , if the cam & crank are aligned put a spanner on the nut in the centre & hold it on the timing mark .
Install the belt from the cam down to the fuel pump , crank up to the tensioner .
Tension the belt , turn the crank , with the bolt installed , one revolution check timing marks are aligned , all good

Gday guys. I just replaced my head gasket over the weekend, made sure all my timing marks where spot on before the tear down, I marked the timing belt on the cam sprocket as well as the direction. I got it all back together how it came off. Got her started and now I have an awful rattle up the top end. So I pulled all every thing off to get to the timing belt, it was loose and the crank was out buy a tooth anticlockwise, all other marks lined up beautifully except the crank. So I reset that put the belt back on rotated the engine a few times every thing seemed to be as it should, harmonic balancer on and fired into life and the Same rattle was there I still feel it’s timing some how but I’m lost as to what. Please help me lol. Cheers

Your pump will be out by one tooth
The pump has a bit of pressure/tendency to spring back by half to one tooth, all looks good until that horrible rattle where you know its not right
The pump has a timing mark on it, the aligning mark is on the radiator pipe housing and can just look like a casting mark/flaw

I forget exactly wich way it all turns, but put your belt on the crank? then use a spanner/socket rotate the pump one tooth backwards put the belt on let pump go see if marks align, repete several times if needed
the pump will spring back and tension the belt ever so slightly and align on the mark
too easy to get those ugly rattles it all looks good but just a small inaccuracy

cheers man. Yeah it springs back in an anticlockwise direction. That mark on it is all lined up with the belt on and tensioned as well.but I’ll take the belt off this afternoon and try that before I go look in the valve train
