I'm a ranger working for Parks and Wildlife in and around the Alice. Feel free to ask about anything related to the Centre.

Prescribed areas

Hi

My question is: Are the Prescribed Areas laws still enforced in Central Australia and if so do they apply to Transit Journeys through?

Cheers

Fantastic ! Nothing like local knowledge, welcome to the forum ! Your imput will be greatly appreciated .

Have a crew leaving Mildura on the 16th of July to go over the Simpson via Broken Hill, Tibbooburra, Inaminkah, Birdsville via Walkers crossing or Cordillo Downs what is open >

Always hard to say regarding flooding at the moment .

What is the Eastern end of the Simpson like at the moment and what is the probability that we will be able to get through come mid July .

Do you have any word of how the Coonjee lakes are ?

Any info will be greatly appreciated .

Ummm Alice is quite a distance from the eastern end of the Simpson Desert which also lies in Queensland

But to answer your question...there is plenty of water in Coongie Lakes due to Cooper Creek flooding. 50/50 chance of getting through from the East into the Simpson by mid July. Depends how quick it dries out.

Well DUH !:rolleyes::rolleyes: That doesn't mean that they don't talk to people in simillar departments over the border . Our last Simpson Desert trip in 2007 we were able to get through Walkers crossing ( they had only reopened it the week before ) Cordillo Downs had been open a few weeks before that .

There is also the Western end of the Simpson to be considered, so having someone who can furnish more up to date information than what may be on ExploreOZ roads information is a great plus !

Does Prescribed area legislation still stand?

Well, a nice first question...the answer is a little tricky. Normally the prescribed area legislation stands but as a result of the intervention I believe the legislation has been suspended to a degree. Don't quote me but I believe as long as you only intend to transit an area you officially don't need a permit. However I suspect the Land Council's would say otherwise. If you don't stop anywhere then who ese is going to check your validity in being where you are...?

The next point and I would love to see it tested in court is that if you remain within the road corridor then you are on a public road....in that in most jurisdictions if you can drive along a road that you can enter without going through a gate into someones property then it is classified as a road under the road traffic act....someone pretty please..test this...I think it would be an interesting result.....

The Western side of the Simpson Desert is drying quickly....I just spoke to someone who had been down the Hay River Track and on Madigan's and they said it was virtually dry, however is some areas the tracks are pretty cut up.

However there is rain forecast for the Centre this very weekend.....

I don't weant to pick a fight with you but common sense tells me to ring the either the Caravan Park, Pub or Ranger in Birdsville for Eastern Simpson info or Mt Dare for Western Simpson info. The originator of this post states "in and around the Alice" i.e. in close proximity to Alice Springs....hence the comment

You're quite right

You are right...if I don't have intimate knowledge of a place that's exactly what I do...funnily I was down at Mt. Dare a few weeks back, yes...just when it rained again. This part of the desert was awash and if I hadn't just today spoke to a person who had literally just come back from down there I wouldn't have posted the comments.

But ok, yes I currently work in and around Alice but I do converse regularly with the district ranger operating in the desert parks of SA. I also get out n about quite regularly and in fact will be back down there soon on a long weekend trip to Halligan's Bay on Lake Eyre. As I said...feel free to ask questions...I can but try to answer, if I can't I will let you know....
cheers
