Hey Chiefdog
If you have the box trailer why not just get a fold out camper tent unit and bolt it on to the box you get heaps of room and easy to put up and down and have the box trailer for storage.

I can say I know one guy who has tried. (No not me.) It's in the graveyard now. A modified box trailer with Big springs and Landcruser wheels. Essentially it worked fine for soft roading and crusing, but any long dirt adventures it leaked badly, made a whole lot of noise and fittings and the like got real loose, requiring endless adjustment.

The cost factor and maintenance compared to buying a factory second hand unit was just to much.

Still if you have the time and skill. You may come up with something Awesome. Good luck whichever way you go.

cheifdog, if you go your own design. Keep a record of it all. Take lots of pics and post it for us all to see. I know if you get on a winner, I'd consider doing one myself.

thanks for your encouragment guys. i have considered a tent top as they are a very good idea. but i really want something that requires next to no fuss to set up (quickest time to crack a beer eh!!!. so i thought of a small type of camper with a bed small table and basic cooking gear yet still light enough for my turbo diesel patrol to drag up the beach to our favourite fishin' spots.i can get my hands on a 10x4 heavy duty single axle trailer sprung over with electric brakes and extended draw bar, in theory this should make a decent platform for a "mini caravan type camper."

Hi Chiefdog,

I know your old post is quite old, but wondering how you got on. I know someone who sells what they are advertising as camper trailers, but they are more like a teardrop van. They are pretty expensive though. But if you're still looking, I could find out more for you.

Cheers.
