Hi all!
I am thinking about replacing my the motor in a 1999 Patrol 2.8 with a rebuilt 4.2 Turbo Diesel. Can anybody tell me if it will bolt straight in and or what I need to change. Has anybody ot there done it? Do you need to change clutches/transfer cases or anything else?

I supose I need to upgrade the suspension due to the weight?

I would really appreciate your advice.

Regards,
Glenn

Send Frosty a msg. He just put a 6.5 litre Chevy diesel V8 in his 2.8. Kills the 4.2.

Thanks Big Rig.

The main point is that I already have the 4.2. It is not a turbo, but has low K's and I own it. Low K 2.8's are selling for reasonable prices, but I am worried about the power and torque for the size of the car. The GU is no light weight and I was hoping a turbo and, hopefully intercooler wouldn't cost too much for me to have added and then installed in place of the 2.8.

Tanks for your input.

Glenn

The big bucks start now. You've gota change both diff centers and the gearbox. The clutch is on the wrong side and the slave is wrong. The starter motor. The Radiator is wrong. (I got a flash one I'll sell ya cheap). Engine mounts. gear box mount mods. The list goes on and on.

Better sit down and work it out PROPERLY. I priced the gear and was going to cost about $15K. (fitted) Stuffed if I was doin it!! I did not have a 4.2 sitting on the floor though. The Chev is an easier conversion.

You do realize that naturally asthmatic 4.2 won't pull ANYWHERE near the RD2.8?????

The big question, A 6.5Lt Chev will cost $22K min if you do most yourself. All done. Finished. BUT,,,,,, IT IS AWESOME!! Before you discount it, try and get a drive of one!!! Also, if you put a 4.2 in, the value of the vehicle will NOT IMPROVE. It can only be insured for what it is now. And only sold for bugger all more. Mine is now insured through Shannons for $33K. I've already been offered $31K. Sorry, not for sale,,,,yet!

I agree with Frosty. I had my conversion done before Frosty did His. I had the 3.0ltr Motor and it died. It took me 6 months of serious researce before I decided on my new motor. To replace my 3.0 ltr was around $20,000. A 4.2 was around $15-17,000. A fully enginered Chevy 6.5 V8 Diesel cost me $23,000 and that included shipping the car to WA.
The Patrol is now AWSOME. And its also not for sale:D:D:D. Brunswick do everything from replacing the diff centres to the radiator and replacing the wiring harness. Go have a look at there site. Brunswick Community Portal.

It gets as good, if not better than the 2.8. My speedo is about 20% out at the moment. It used the same amount of fuel as a 4.2 on fraser over 600km's. And I was towing a trailer in soft sand for 1/2 of it!!

Thanks Guys,

Certainly plenty to think about. What kind of thirst does the big donk have?

Glenn

Like all big donks the harder you drive the more fuel you use. My 6.5 averages about the same as our sons 4.2 we average about 8-9 ks per litre. And while towing the camper I have found very little difference in milage average speed 100ks per hour unless I drive it hard 115- 120 ks.Then it drinks the fuel. But when we had the 3 ltr motor with camper it drank the fuel if I tried to go any faster than 80-90 ks per hour. With an 145 litre main fuel tank and a 70 litre reserve a total of 210 litres with camper I get an average of 1100ks and without I can get just over 1300ks. Thats both tanks basically dry. On 120 litres I can travel just on 800 ks of Freeway driving. I do an average (or should say I used to) of 240 kilometers a day round trip too and from work 5 days a week average speed on the freeway of 115ks per hour over hilly terrain.
