Hi guys
Doing Haunted Stream soon and was looking for an alterative way back to Dargo from Tambo Crossing end. Something a bit more southerly trackwise as I have done around the north to get back onto Berrigun Rd.
So basically need to do Dargo to Dargo in a day.
Thanks
Dave

Are you looking for a touring type drive or something a bit more rugged?

I recommend having a look around here mate,Go down Messmate Spur Track (Off Berrigans),into Wildhorse Spur Track onto Wayne Track ,Then towards Mt Steve. there are a few river crossings and could see some being dangerous at higher river levels so be careful... Then head west back into on Gidley track Dargo..I'll assume u have detailed maps of the area....

its quite nice in that area too....Murdering Spur Track looks great too..

cheers

No need to panick Alan, just nutting out some alternative routes in case of rain!
Thanks Swaggie, will be doing Messmate and Murdering Spur on the next day after Haunted Stream. I was looking at some tracks more south of Haunted Stream to get back to Dargo.

The quick way back from Tambo crossing end would be to head towards Bruthen for around 1.5 to 2 ks there is a track on the right called Tambo Spur track follow that all the way and it will come out at Engineers rd. Turn right at engineers and follow it up to Baldhead rd. Turn left and follow it till you come to the Seldom Seen Hut. Turn right onto Jones rd and follow it back into Dargo.

If you are gunna do murdering spur track check with the ranger at Dargo or Swifts creek. Last time our club was in there it was unpassable at the bottom end.

A good day trip from Dargo is to head up towards Seldom Seen hut but not long after crossing the wentworth river there is a track on the right hand side, this is Wild horse track. Follow this track for araound1.5 k's and you will come to a track on the right Mt Pheasant track. Turn right and follow the track all the way till you come to Mc Donalds trk. Turn left and follow it till you come to Wild horse track. Turn left and follow it to Dane track
Turn right and follow Dane track to the river. Follow the track along the river and turn into Cams Top Place and stop for lunch and look at the old hut. After the break you can either back track along Dane track to Murdering spur track and take that up to the Birregun rd or alternatively turn right and take Dane track back to the Birregun rd.

If you go up murdering spur track turn right when you hit the Birregun Rd and around 3.5 to 4 klms along the rd there is a track on the right SP track or Stock track.
If you come out of Dane track, turn Left and follow it for around 7- 8 ks till you reach the sp track.
Turn onto sp track and follow it down till you hit the Dargo River Take care crossing the river it is relative easy back can be tricky after rain. Once across the river turn left and follow the track to harringtons cut. Its worth a look if you havent seen it. Back track to the track on the right and follow it all the way to the top. This is Matheson spur track and run all the way up the spur. It will come out on the Dargo high plains road turn Left and follow it back to Dargo.

Once again I would check with Parks on the condition of Murdering spur Track.

All these tracks can be followed on the rooftop map Dargo Swifts Creek Forest Activities Map.

If you do go down either Messmate or Danes of the Birregun there is a couple of spots where the track is red clay. Be careful on these spots if there is any rain they are slippery as hell.

Thanks Bigjedd, done all of those tracks in the past and will be doing those the day after we do Haunted Stream.
The tracks back from Tambo's Crossing is what I needed and thankyou.
Was going to come up Murdering Spur from Camm's Top Place....might be Danes instead to get over to Stock Route .
Any idea what the problem was with Murdering Spur?

Just be careful of Jones Rd where it crosses the Wentworth River. It is marked as a bridge on the map, but it is actually washed out- and has been since the floods after the big fires a couple of years ago.

A little hairy going into the water on the swifts creek side, but fairly basic after that...... Just beware of the water flow as it is channeled through a rock chute immediately upstream of the crossing.

Just a note- I was last at this crossing August last year, so things could have changed.

Check at the DSE works yard in Dargo or the General Store.

No worries mate,If you want to go a little more south than the suggestions above,Google Michell National Park it is magic, especially the Amphitheater on Billy Goat bend Rd.Come in from the Calvi Hill side that turns into Hortons Track. There is a river crossing at the end..Be careful of this river crossing it can be treacherous depending on the level, many hav failed according to DSE.I know (hav the photos to prove it lol) I got halfway across and lost front steering (floating) ive floated backwards down the rapids till i got caught up on an embankment of rocks, nearly half the car filled up with water and the water level was at the top of the doors and bottom of the canopy lol.,With my IBM Laptop on the seat and water pissing in,Icom Handhelds,Mag GPS and other elecs i was like speedy Gonzales trying to get them to dry ground lmao,i since use dry sacks for electrical.
Once we eventually got his wire on my rear shackle (took about half a dozen goes, once near front passenger side because vehicle was facing up river we got swept down the river lol,it was about 28 degrees so luckily we did not get cold and was about 4.30 at night.I decided to be pulled off backwards not the front way as suggested.Once of the rocks etc, Then sideways down the river until my mates winch pulled me up like a fish on a hook lol.
If its waist deep i wouldn't bother (actually don't bother at all lol ,think the water level will be high). It will be a wide crossing and very little to winch you out if alone.Although when i did it was flooded 2 weeks earlier according to the internet, hadn't known this beforehand.

If you do, hav an escape plan set beforehand its important anywhere and anytime when rivers are on the higher side,it was a great lesson for me i tell ya,winch remote is ready and recovery gear,we could hav done with more winch rope but in the moment and being new then i forgot about the winch extension rope in the ARB Recovery bag...lmao..That was my second river crossing so knocked the crappers outa me mentally and had another 2 days left in "The Gatta" area with plenty more crossings as u know,The Kingswell Bridge one was next so went across nervously a few times to get it out my system lol...Ive done about 180 crossings since....Including Haunted Stream,Crooked River..Wonnangatta etc Walhalla no probs at all :):):) ...

Sorry for the ramblings lol

I beleive the bank of the river was washed out at the bottom of murdering spur and there was a pile of logs pushed up against where the bank was. I was told a small group had winched there way out but it took an hour to get everyone through. Dont know if the track is still damaged or it has been repaired but if they have had rain up there it may be a good idea to avoid it unless you get the ok from dse.

Just came back from running a trip to Haunted Stream from Dargo to find Jones Rd closed between Berrigan Rd and Mt Baldhead Rd (Seldom Seen Hut) . Apparently they were just doing bridge works and then decided to fix rd as well. Explained to us it was a $5000 fine per vehicle if driven on. Good to see the locals taking heed of the warnings
I checked on Rd conditions on websites Parks/DSE etc, nothing mentioned about Jones Rd being closed.
As a result Haunted Stream was not an option due to the large detours to get to the area.
Did I miss something or was it a last minute decision to do the works.
Also someone (presumedly 4wders) has pulled the trigg over on Mt Blue Rag. It now rests on it side pulled from it's concrete pads!

Thats a shame Pickle (Jones Rd)...Mt Blue Rag well they wouldn't do it while other 4wdrives are about and if they did i would hope number plates would be taken...Shows the intelligence level of someone who gets a kick out of 3 poles falling over...Why did they hav to close all the Sanitariums down..lol
