hey guys I have a 2.8 liter gu and I'm thinking about re gearing my doffs to suit the larger tires..... Now I have been through all this in my jeep but have never had anything to do with nissans before. So question is does any one know what the stock ratios on a 98 gu patrol are? And second what ratios you guys have used to suit between 33 and 35 inch tires ? Any help would be great. I wanna get this thing running as good as possible for the little 2.8 and also I wanna do touring not just crawling so I wanna still be able to sit on 110 on the highway with out revving it's guts out.
Thanks for your help..

Dean.

I have a 99 GU with the Mighty 2.8 ;). Not sure on the ratios but I run 33's and have been told 35's would be okay with the ratios that are in this model. Hook up a Chip and chuck on a 3" exhaust and you'll get your little 2.8 running as good as it can. I love mine now since I did those mods. Heaps more get up and go and sounds great too! :D

Yeah I have done the exhaust already but it has a muffler so does not have much of a note to it.....thinking bout taking it out. What chip do u have and how much noticeable was the gains ?

The 2.8's have 4.6 gears standard, the only option higher than that is 4.88.

Do u think that the 4.88 would do much ? I know on my jeep i think I went from 3.07 to 4.56 and the difference was amazing better then a stock car with standard tires and I was running 35s.

What about your fuel econ? i have just purchased a 2.8 2000 patrol, put on a set of 33 muddies and have just done my 1st 1/4 tank of diesel for 95km's?
is this normal or will diff gear change help?
forgot to mention that at 80km/hr revs are bout 2150

Not sure on the difference mate I had 33s on it when I got it. I heard it makes a big difference in performance.... A lot harder to get goin on hills and what not. How do u find it ?

yeh takes more revs to spool the small girl up but i find these little engines like to rev. i also have a GQ coil cab ute, has the td42 with aftermarket turbo on it.... torque is very low down in rev range, can idle up hills that need a little right foot with the 2.8.

4.625 diff ratios in the 2.8 are perfect for running 35" - 38" tyres
4.88 is too low unless you plan on running 38"+ tyre size

I've recently replaced my stock 3.9 ratios in my '98 4.5 GU

I'll have to question that.

4.625:1 is stock standard gearing on a 2.8.

So in reality 4.625:1 is ideal for 31 inch stock size tyres.

Bigger tyres compromise the gearing.

Bottom line is the bigger the tyre the more performance is lost and there is no readily available way of recovering that lost power.

You can ultimately run what ever tyre you want but bigger tyre will compromise driveability.

the 2.8 is gutless & nissan knew that hence why they gave them the oh so good 4.625 diff gears.

4.625 is only ideal for 31" tyres on a 2.8 as it needs this gearing to be able to go anywhere other wise it would struggle to turn the wheels.

however when the 4.625 diff gears from the 2.8 are put into a 4.2 TD or 4.5/4.8 GU when running a 36" tyre returns the gearing of the diffs & engine back to being extremely close to standard again meaning that running a 35" - 38" tyre is no problem.

I dont run a muffler and it definitely makes it sound AWESOME!! People are surprised it's only a 2.8. It's get's the turbo spinning quicker which is what it needs not to mention cooler exhaust temps. Do yourself a favour and chip it. Best mod I've done. Huge gains in performance and driveability. Forget about fuel economy as I think it goes out the window but that's the price you pay for tweaking up the 2.8. I have always run 33's so dont know any different.
