Happens all the time...
It doesn't only happen down south believe me! In central Australia we get a lot of international tourists hiring 4WDs and taking off all over the place....one of my faves was a Japanese couple in a hired Commodore with gps trekking off to Uluru. They ended up on the Giles Track, recommended 4wd only, and stuck in sand. Luckily I came along and helped them out. The gps had indicated the Giles Road to Uluru when in fact it is the shortest route to Kings Canyon from the Stuart Highway.
I said to them that they shouldn't believe in gps with blind faith and to take notice of road signs too.
cheers
