Gearbox

I have a 94 hilux just done the reverse gear in it. Was just wondering if it's cheaper to replace just the reverse gears or scrap that idea and just replace the whole gearbox?
1st to 5th work fine , and is it easy enough for anyone to to swap gears out?

If one has gone, it`s a good bet more will follow.
Think about this if you replace reverse and put the box back in, more sooner than later something else will go bang.
Best to either get the whole thing reco`d or another box.

If planning on keeping the car for a while I would rebuild the box , there are also mods available to make the 5th gear much stronger by removing the floating shaft , well worth looking into ( I assume this mod applies to the hilux box as it does the cruiser box which makes them stronger and more user friendly)

Was a standard mod to a celica box when you put one into a Holden

Sorry forgot to mention it ended up blowing cause I had to roll start it in reverse a couple of times. But if you think reco is best I will do

Roll starting in reverse usually stuffs the diff in hiluxes, reverse is too low a gear to roll start, too much stress on the parts . better to turn around so you can roll start forward in 2nd gear

Here's an interesting story for you!

The early GM Hydra-matics and Powerglides could be push started if you could get them up to about 35 mph. The oil pump in the transmission would build up enough pressure to engage drive.

Apparently they were the only ones that would do this although I was pretty certain that some of the old Jaguars could too. The GM pumps were changed in later production and they would no longer be able to do it.

If 1st to 5th are doing good, you might wanna consider just swapping the reverse gears. It's not rocket science, but gearbox replacement can be a headache.
