Gearbox problems in my hilux

I have a 04 model hilux dual cab and am gettting a whining noise under load in 1st 2nd 3rd 5th and reverse. 4th gear is fine. I have a feeling it may be an input shaft bearing or cluster bearing because 4th gear is direct drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it may be or approx how much to repair? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I think your spot on with the input shaft bearing diagnosis although it could also be the front cluster. Try putting your foot on the clutch while driving and see if the noise gets any quieter. if it doesn't then it might be your rear cluster. Anyways, bearings for the gearbox are fairly cheap if you get them from CBC or one of those bearing companies and they are relatively easy to replace.. If your gonna replace one bearing its best to replace the lot. all you need is a puller set and a little know how. From your diagnosis it sounds like you might be able to have a crack at it yourself. Do you know anyone who might be able to give you a hand?

It does get quieter. My main concern is how long it will last and if it does go, what kind of damage is it going to cause....

oh, and the oil level is ok, not the cleanest though.

my cruiser has lasted quite some time with the same problem, im not replaceing it unless go's, but i dont think it will any time soon, my old boss had a 60 series cruiser same problem and more and he used to tow nearly every day fair weight and for the few years i was working for him it never went.
my mechanic said the same thing it will probly just keep gonig and going. as his did.

i do remember the day myn started to get noisey it was after a trip to the otways for 4 days. probly close to a year ago now, iv been back to the otways twice since and a few other places 4x4ing and it still makes noise but gets me to work every day too.

I do agree with phs, cruisers have a bloody tough gearbox and take some killin. Unfortunately toyota didn't replicate this in the hilux. They aren't a very strong gearbox hence the fact that you probably have the noise. I would most definately change the oil and maybe one of those wynns additives to tie you over. It does sound like the input bearing - it is the largest bearing in the box and thats because it has to take the most load. They generally will take a while to flog out completely and there may or may not be a warning as to when it will happen. If it was me, i would be getting my bearings and changing them first chance i had - BUT that all depends on the noise. Best to get someone who has gearbox experience to take a listen as soon as you can. Little hard to diagnose online. It could be an expensive exercise to leave it and hope it will last. The last set of bearing i replaced was in a 2.8D hilux and from memory and they cost about $200.00. i didn't change the needle rollers under the gears, just the 5 main rollers and of course all circlips as they tend to fall off if they loose their tension. Trait of the hilux.

See if you can locate a gearbox out of a Prado, they are the same as the Landcruisers and will have the correct spline for the 3.4 or 3.0, should work unless you have the 2.7.

I was quoted $1500 from toyota plus parts... I thought that was a little pricey... It has done 200 000km mostley highway so I think i'll get it done asap. I just don't have $1500 in my back pocket...

Yea, that sounds about right by Toyota. Have you ever had anything to do with gearboxes or stripping them? These boxes really aren't that hard to do..... Trickiest part is the puller set.

nah... not really... I know how they work and whats inside but pulling it apart i'm a bit sceptical about... I know a couple of guys who work at sci-fleet toyota. Might see what they can do for me...
