Sorry Rob,

I'm here, just a little tired last night went away for the weekend. Have you considered a PDA with a built in GPS? You can get them for under $600.00 You can then load OziExplorerCE $40.00 and then you can put on digital maps. There are some free digital maps that are good and will get you started. This way you aren't relying on Garmin's base map.

Cheers Rossco

I had a legend Cx which was very similar to the venture hc except the venture has better satellite pickup. The venture hc doesn't have an SD card slot - which might prove to be a problem if you want large maps (like topo maps) on there. Other than that it is a good unit. No city navigator built-in though so that's extra if you want street nav.

The Garmin base map isn't that great.
Check this site out .:GPS Australia:.

There are additional maps available for Garmins, but not as many that are available for use in OziExplorer.

At GPS Australia, look for Shonky Logic's maps and Doughans 5m contours. :)

Also a thread by Doughan on a free and legal Mapsource installation.
