Fuel Tap (petcock) install

G'day,

Considering installing a in-line fuel cut off valve (petcock) on the diesel fuel line of my old 97' Hilux as an added security/anti theft feature.
Now I'm curious, If the engine was started without the fuel tap being turned on
Could that possibly damage the diesel injector pump ?

If its not getting fuel then how will it continue to run?

I'd say it would possible start while there is fuel in the line & filter, for how long would depend on where the valve is placed.

If it were me I would rather cut off the power.
