hi was wondering if anyone has fuel figures for a nissan navara crossing the simpson desert, as in august were doing this trip......... with trailer,

 what the! everyone say ........ dont do it!

but am very well prepaired and looking forward to the challange NO IM NOT A NUTTER Ive had a lot of experence and am very mechanicly minded person, Lots of preperation on the trailer and a light load lol
(as light as we can). Three weeks on the road and 4-5 days in the simpson
planing on 80 litres lpg gas - 85litres petrol and 60 litres fuel in drum.
any positive info would be great. :)
cheers fozzee

Try exploreoz, they've got some peoples figures from previous crossings.

And about the fuel usage how far are you driving between fuel stops?

I'd allow 20l/100 with a decent safety margin.

Are you going with anyone else? (hope your not going solo with a trailer:eek:

that is a hard question to answer because conditions change out there alot, the best answer is load up the vehicle as if you were going out into the desert, see what fuel consumption you get then add 33%, I would also fill up at every chance you get when you are out there. Also i would just try to use the petrol side of things and only use the gas if your petrol gets low and there is nowhere close to fill up.

I did it last year with a mate who was in a Navara D40 { no trailer } we went the long way west to east.
I think he used 130lt from dare to birdsville if the sand is soft like it was then and you are going to be towing a trailer I would say to allow at least 180lt.
I used 140lt for the 660km.
If you dont realy need the trailer I would not take it, it would be an easier crossing without and will cause less damage to the dunes for other travellers.

TRAILERS are not recommended in the Simpson - In my opinion they should be banned - There a menace.

(Now I am off the soap box)

Where are you going to buy the Gas?

There is a well known Commercial operator that recommends 200 ltrs for Petrol vehicles, WITHOUT A TRAILER.

Which way are you going?
* French Line (I definately don't recommend that for a trailer - I saw a convoy in big trouble last year)
* WAA Line or Rig Road?

Are you going in or out via the QAA Line or Warburton Crossing/ Inside Track? (The Inside Track is often closed).

I would ask you to have a think again about the trailer over the Simpson, you are only adding weight to the argument for locking up the Simpson- the draw bar of the trailers just do a heap of damage to the crest of the dunes , just what the 4X4 scene doesn't need.

The south Australian parks people frown upon trailers going into the Simpson ! The Simpson was closed down this summer gone because of the expected extreme heat conditions , that was the reason given, in fact it was probably no worse than any other year .

As 4X4 enthusiasts, we should be doing everything to prevent any further reason for these closures- it's the thin edge of the wedge and if this sort of thing continues, I'm afraid that about 5 years down the track only escorted tours will be allowed through , in short paying for the priveledge .

Fuel consumption will be through the roof hauling a trailer anyway on top of the figures above, if that doesn't deter you then mechanical wear and tear should be your greatest concern, a few years ago when we went through , we were told it would cost about $5000 to recover a vehicle from the Simpson, I would hate to think what it is now .

So Sunshine, have a good think about it ! We are going across again in July and if any one in our party turned up with a trailer they would be told to P!SS OFF !
