Fuel Consumption Rates

Not having a go at you but where did you get the info from about the fuel figures it needs to be updated I would have expected modern vehicles to be a lot better on fuel than the older ones. I have a copy of 4X4 Australia from 1998 with exactly the same info you provided word for word that info is 17 years old.

95 Pajero diesel 2.8 manual averages 10l/100km in city driving. On hwy running 110 to 140 it drops as low as 8.5.

Yeah, sitting on 90ks in a convoy (for those N/A diesels in the group :D) we notice great economy, go over 95 and it gradually gets worse as the speed increases.

Isn't it interesting when your around the camp fire with a few drinks that everyone gets miles better fuel consumption than you. I know some that get fantastic fuel figures without drinks.:D

Well I have just put on some new bigger tyres and it has pushed my fuel consumption up to around 20L/100kms for a V6 rodeo. I was averaging around 14-15L/100kms and think its a fair jump in useage for a 1" increase in tyre size.

just did 5500 k's Hobart, Melbourne, Newell to Brisbane, 5 days on Fraser, up to Bundaberg, to Sydney via the Pacific then to Melb via the Hume and back to Hobart. 92 Patrol ST30 converted to TD 4.2 4.33 diffs, 285/75 16's, roof rack two swags up top and other gear travelling between 95 and 105kmh. Got 16.5 l/100 k's for the whole trip

Bigger tyres with a more aggressive tread make a big difference to your economy.

I had a 22R hilux on petrol/gas which used 35L/100km on a trip from Perth to Cervantes with a bit of beach/dune driving. It was running 33's, and the old 2.4 carby motor loved to drink!

My 80 series seems to do 15 - 16.5L/100km with 33's and fully loaded. I hope to better this in the future with a few adjustments - my neighbour is getting 13 with the same setup (except for a Gturbo!)

My 2.8 GQ gets about 13L per 100 both town driving and highway (if I stay under 100kph), so I'd be happy with those figures. It must be screaming at 140 lol

That's horrendous, borderline unbelievable! My old 351 Clevelend V8 with a Holley 750DP (untuned) used to get 26lt per 100km which I thought was unacceptable, and that was driving it easy.

Yep. Being on LPG it would have used 20% more, so that brings it down to 28L/100km. I was shocked when I was driving through Wanneroo and felt the car run out of gas - 140 litres of LPG gone in around 370km!

We get 330- 340 k's out 90lts,,33's and 3"lift with roof rack but thats unloaded,, load her up for a camp trip and we're down around 300 -310k's from 90 ltrs.

I run a 91 Troopy on petrol/gas. I mainly use the gas and I use petrol only to keep it running good on both. On gas , fully loaded, towing a 14ft caravan at around 90 to 100 k.p.h. I get about 25 litres per hundred k's.
Gas being about half cost of petrol were I go that equates to around 12.5 litres per hundred k's. On petrol, consumption is the same , but of course dearer.
Now that I have a new rear diff centre there is no more binding up, so I expect to do better. OH yes, I did install an electronic dizzy and it purrs along.
Motor is a 4 litre six and has done about 370,000 k's.

I get 13.5-14.5L/100km in my 1hz 95 troopy with 33's, and about 11.5-12.5 l/100km with the stock 750r16's. That's adjusted for the difference in the tachometer reading

Currently, I'm pretty lucky to get 450kms out of my 65L tank :/ which is pretty terrible for a 2008 Xtrail; granted it's only a 2.5L petrol with oversized tyres, and it permanently carries recovery gear, compressor, 5-10L water, large toolbox, 60L fridge, roof racks and awning etc.

After reading this thread, I'm fairly certain my next vehicle will at the very least run on diesel, and definitely won't be an 80 series

I've been taking notice of mine for a while now. 2010 Land cruiser 76 series wagon.
For a 4.5l V8 (diesel) and heavy (weighs on three ton) I'm pretty dam happy.

Just did O'Tooles back to Sydney on highway 110km whole way and got 13.1 liters per hundred. Around town average 12.5 liters per hundred.
Did 800km on Fraser island and was blown away at 14.9 Liters per hundred.

For the weight and size, I'm satisfied with that. Also this isn't taking into consideration my speedo is out due to 285/75/16 tires. Think it's about 7% out. So figures would actually be a little better.

Only worked out fuel consumption once in the 80. With a mixture of city and highway running with the trailer loaded for some, I got 13.02 L/100.

I did a 8400km trip in my 2010 Colorado crew with a dirty great big camper on the back with 5 people on board and camp gear . food and luggage max payload . Averaged 11kms per 100. Then I did a 3000km trip by my self running with a empty tray and average 14.5kms per 100 and put this down to the fact when I had the camper on I simply just could not overtake as it did running empty and I always met the speed limit instead of just sitting back and following a truck or car .

I have a petrol 3.8L 2008 Pajero, with mud tyres and 2" lift. Weighs in at around 2.5 tonne. I'll get around 14l/100k sitting on 100-110kph on the highway. And around 17.5l/100k around town. That's according to the readout on the dash. I haven't checked for accuracy at the pump. But I'm not sure how far off the computer readout is, going from 30.5" (stock) wheel diameter to 32"?

Don't trust the trip computer stuff, they are only a guide . . . get your km and lt each fill and work it out manually.
Over 10 + tanks you will get a good avg of real fuel usage.

Just did the Adel - Syd - Bris - Adel run, a bit over 4200km.
Avg 10.92 lt / 100km, inc a small look at Stockton and a bit of a drive through Candole.
Ran the standard 28-1/2" wheels / tyres.

Same trip again soon, might throw the 32's on and see if some rubber overdrive makes a difference with the mostly highway driving.
