Hi all,
looking at fridges as the evakool has finally had its last legs (now an esky as its shit as a fridge, long story).
narrowed down to 2 fridges.
1. national luna,
2. trailblaza

only thing stopping me on the national luna is the massive price difference. (2300 vs 3500).
Anyone have any reviews good or bad about either? is the trailblaza really worth the extra dollars?
with the trailblaza, how is the evenness in temperature with the fridge lines running through the floor and the sides?

As much as i do love the aussie made, damn that is a big difference.
Thing I do like about the trailblaza if all electronics fails you can by pass it and run the compressor full time to get you out of trouble.

National luna 40l used as a freezer across the Simpson on a single 60ah lithium battery and is now in the garage as an overflow freezer. Can't fault it.

How old is your RF Evakool what condition and age I saw you mentioned it in the camping section that it stopped working.

The fridge (RFE60) is just out of warranty of 5 years. Have had nothing but trouble. and yes have had it looked at by their so called warranty agent (but not any more) and one other.
first of all, the problems had with the stupid plug they use is one thing.
the next issue was that it use to start and stop too often and constantly throw fault codes. Being the first iteration of the external compressor compartment they tried their own style of compressor again (like they didn't learn the first time. Danfoss have their shit sorted). When I took it in for warranty the warranty agent said the control board has died. replaced it and gave it back.

Started doing exactly the same thing the day I got it back. took it back said it still doesn't work. Found out from evakool they released a second control board to stop the power cycling too often, which was a common problem with the first batch, (thanks for the heads up on that one, not).

I still was getting faults. So I logged the warranty again, after trying different leads and power supply (dad had an older RF model with dial control that just freezes everything). I said I am not entirely happy after all the faults and I would basically want to consider this getting lemon lawed (to something of that regards) as it has been nothing but trouble. Then I was told they only have record of one fault with the fridge to date and that was for the install of the second control board to stop the excessive power cycling. they thought the fault was weird so they wanted the fridge back at base. after 3 - 4 months of it being sent (well the warranty agent took a month to finally send it), I heard nothing. No follow up emails or phone call at all. after many emails and phone calls later and a lot of waiting I finally got the fridge back, with the reply it was the lead at fault.

The final nail in the coffin was just last finke. after doing some rewiring on the car just before (changing around the dual battery system and outlets on the tray), the first 1.5 days was perfect (with the old lead mind you that was supposedly faulty. Fridge was working fine. The next day, coming back from doing sweeps for finke, I noticed the fridge was at 10 degrees. Still hearing the compressor running I became suspicious. Needless to say no fault codes, no nothing. Tried different batteries, leads everything. Compressor runs fine but still not cooling. Well after getting home, the fault was found. Turned out the refrigerant line going into the fridge had snapped and a little bit of oil soakage was evident in the foam surrounding the line. Unfortunately where it snapped was in a place that was not able to be repaired as it was on the aluminium tubing (changes when it goes into the fridge, and was where it went into the fibreglass. Advice was if it has snapped there, they suspect it will snap elsewhere. 2 people looked at it and said the same thing. not worth repairing.

after getting on their website, and found out the 2 warranty agents that were in town no longer listed on the website. I rang them up and they said they have never heard of a warranty agent in my town?? What. Needless to say, the fridge part has been removed off the side, holes patched and the fridge is now being turned back into an esky (what it originally was based on the holes I found where the handle was mounted). Was not happy with the service at all. after mentioning I was dissatisfied with the service, they had the hide to try and recommend their down under series fridge. Needless to say that won't be happening.

**EDIT** forgot to mention I have had to replace 2 x control panels as well at my own expense as the board has played up.

I have since noticed they have gone back to the secop compressor, but will not be taking the risk again (pitty cause their insulation properties are fantastic, hence why I made it an esky again.

Hence the reason for looking at the national luna or the trailblaza. looking for something that is going to stand the test of time on the back of the ute. just the price difference between the two is a big hit. I have heard nothing but good reviews on the trailblaza, but man 3500 for a dual zone fridge and running 2 compressors, seems a tad backwards. I don't understand why 2 compressors (in the 2 in 1 model). I suppose when 1 fails you can always use the other one. But a bit skeptical about the power consumption. but the excessive weight and the power draw (although a lot of people seem to think they are ultra efficient but can never give me any figures to compare with).

and if anyone tells me buy an engel or waeco, Im going to loose it.

I have a National Luna, They use little power, keep a fairly constant temperature, and are super reliable. I haven't had an evacool but you won't go wrong with a NL IMHO.

Totally understand why your looking for a more reliable fridge hope you have better luck. The trailblazer look good but way to bulky taking up to much space for myself. Bushman fridges get good reviews.

Like your dad I have the older dial RF model 17yrs on still good but yes on the lowest setting things still freeze in the freezer section the fridge side is fine.

Not that it matters for you, but for anybody else following this discussion, you can do that with the Evakool also.

5 YO with their first iteration of compressor? Did they try a different compressor between the danfoss and the secop? I have one of each. My RF60 has been running in the ute/s pretty much non stop since I bought it in 2008. I also have a 110 with the secop in the camper trailer.

according to the specs the RF60 when I bought mine was a EK25D. A modified version of the secop from my understanding.

have had this discussion with evakool, and was unhappy with their response. I am more seeing what other peoples reviews or experiences are with the fridges I originally asked about. Wasn't trying to slander any company more someone asked for my experience.

dad having one was one of the reasons I had bought one in the first place. His is still going strong.

I don`t know about Waco, but I have had a Engel for 20+ yrs never a problem.

Have a look at Norcoast, they are made in Qld, supposed to be very good.

That's what I'm tossing between. Norcoast aka trailblaza or national Luna. Just a big price difference and weight. (size don't bother me)

1. They are the Toyota of the fridge world. Paying top dollar for old tech
2. They still don't have a digital temperature control
3. Their bags have been proven to disadvantage the cooling capacity
4. They have sweet f a insulation compare to the rest of the fridges on the market
5. The cooling Lines are on the inside which increases the risk of damage
6. From experience I just hate having to use a divider to seperate the fridge from the freezer. Not giving any control over fridge temp without changing freezer temp.
7. From experience of mates. Even when used as combi the freezer in high temps (over 40 degrees), struggles to get down to temp. Sitting on the back of the Ute, it will certainly get above that.

Few more other things but that is the main ones
