Flat Pack Fire pits

Correct. Snowpeak designed and made them for many years, then the Chinese flopped them. The straight rod staino grill plates look appealing on the Chinese copies as the chrome mesh grill with the snowpeak takes some keeping clean.
I have the Drifta base plate with mine - works perfectly and nothing to break. The plate isn’t needed for the pit to work so clipping the feet in will achieve nothing other than an extra level of complexity.

Agree with @cam04 I have the large Snowpeak and the baseplate is simple and the feet don’t move or pop out when being used. Only advantage of the clips would be if relocating as a whole. Snowpeak never patented their design which has been copied by many. My Snowpeak is well made and solid, been regularly using it for 8 years

Kings does a similar firepit, looks pretty good to me?

Looks can be deceiving. The quality and thickness of the steel and the quality of construction will be the difference.

Whilst I am more than happy with my firepit, if the cheaper copies were being copied at the time I purchased, I might have been tempted purely on price alone.

The biggest downside of a fire pit is the additional weight, we decided the extra weight was worth the payoff of not being allowed to have a fire in some places without one.
To offset the extra weight we took the cast camp oven out and replaced that with a spun steel camp oven so only added about 5kg

Matt that looks like a nice pit but too heavy for me, I will run with one of the lighter ones even though it won’t last as long
We won’t use it much anyway

Not wrong about the weight, the cook got it before our last big trip, first I saw the detail it was in our lounge room, hence the need to then get the camp oven replacement, when the better half gets involved we end up with everything including the kitchen sink if you know what I mean….

I have a similar one, and wish it was Stainless steel. Mine is surprisingly heavy but I think the weight is worth it. I usually only use it for caravan parks and replaced the ash plate with a 1.0mm piece of aluminium sheet from bunnings that weights almost nothing. I also have a light weight stainless mesh for cooking from a camping store.

I like how it takes a rotissery and does fold very flat. I have looked at the snow peak and the copies including Darche, but the large Darche one is even heavier. at 18kg. That has to be a misprint.

We got on of these, went the stainless steel light weight, couldn’t be happier with it
Hi @discomatt , Do the bottom pieces of this pit have the fold so that it is supported at the bottom of the V? If not, do you see this as a problem?

Just checking their website and it recommends flipping the pieces between uses. Wondering how it could flipped if it had the fold at the bottom of the V?

It looks the same as my Slotmein one https://www.slotmein.com.au/thewedge/

The two sides have a fold but either will sit inside the other, there is then a v shaped piece that is slotted in below the two as reinforcement.

I used it a couple of times and found it was too heavy and bloody difficult to get apart without a hammer and a lot of swearing the next morning when it has cooled again.

It is now permanently set up on a mates acerage and I got one of the red roads folding pits like the snow peak that works a lot better and is a lot lighter and quicker to pack up

No folds in the side bits, they just slot in and fully reversible, no need for hammering and no difficulty in assembly or pulling it to bits the next morning

I bought one of these yesterday as they were on special for $98.00 including the cooking grill

I will rarely use it and like it because it is lightweight. Quality looks fine as does the price
Snap, I did the same yesterday myself. Funny thing was, the pit without the grill was $99

I didn't need another grill top, but anything to save a dollar :p

Mind you I walked out of that place 10 pinapples lighter

My red roads pit is now almost dead, it needed replacing (that cost me $260 back in 2019 and was a shop owner deal, RRP was $320). The kings pit is identical except for the name stamped into the side. So I only got about 3 years out of that pit.

I went into BCF afterwards, the (identical) darch pit there was only $299. People bag supercenter a lot, but somethings there just make good sense.

I use my pit depending on location. If remote, in a non populated area, the fire goes in the ground. If I want to be more environmentally conscious, I use the pit.

After last weeks 5 nighter chasing astro shots, red roads will be relegated to backyard duties until it totally succumbs...

Haha, I asked them how much without the grill because I don’t really want it and it was going to cost more so I have one now  I had a close look at it and couldn’t fault the quality and at less than 100 bucks was happy to take a chance. I ended up with a new dual fridge monitor and a cryovac machine for my son as well on the way out.

All out of the same factory I'd guess. Happens with a lot of bike frames. Price varies significantly depending on the stickers applied. Performance not so much.

I have one from ARB. It is freaking heavy. I found it and link above.
I have had it full of glowing coals, it has not buckled or warped.
The reason I got hold of this, when the entire family comes around for dinner during the colder months, I can set it up on some timber and have a fire outside. My grassed area is only 14 square meters and having the grass destroyed is not something I’d want. And it gets people outside, whilst my wife gets dinner on the table.
So to answer that question, it was home use firstly, and a handy thing to have whilst camping.
Its a great bit of kit.
