Exhaust Legalities in NSW

Hello everyone,
This is my first post on 4x4 earth but have used it many times in the past for research into the 4x4 world. I'm only new to it all and was wondering can you have a 3-inch exhaust on your 4bie legally (I am also on my Red Ps if that makes a difference). I know many people have them, but I just want to make sure its all legal before I install one on my car. Also is it legal to have a straight pipe, or must I have a muffler as well?

Thank you

Also just for reference, I have a 1998 Nissan GU Patrol with an rd28 motor.

Larger diameter pipes from what I have read are a good benefit to any motor, the main thing is that it meets emissions regs.

A straight pipe would not be a good thing imo.

If in doubt contact the RMS for their requirements.

There are plenty of 3' kits available with the right rated mufflers.

I think the rule was a blanket rule cars made before November 83 can have a 96db reading at about half the rev range and cars post November 83 have to be no louder than 92 DB I think it is and about half their operating range. Don't bother using a dB metre on your iPhone or anything like that as the tests Are Done To federal standards by licensed testers. Basically if you can hear it it's probably over as there are quite a few factory cars that were all but silent and struggled to pass during their release in the 90s and 2000s. This is why it's so common to have variable exhaust now so you can actually meet noise compliance rules at idle and low throttle and still have noise when you stand on it.

It’s crazy stuff, while they’re standing there copping an earful off the officer about how loud there vehicle is plus a fine and a bonus trip to the rta costing even more $$$$$ a gaggle of Harleys fly past bursting there ear drums....

A bit hypocritical isn’t it.....;)

They have been flat out pinging Harleys for excessive noise, even picking on bar height and width. I believe there's actually a current blitz on bikes.

I'm not sure about police blitz's, picking on one target group for one or two offences once a year for a weekend does what exactly?

Not much different to picking on modded 4wds l guess.
It's probably more the harley guys noticing it as most are customized or modded in some way.

The cops mainly pick on speeders over those event periods, we get huge numbers of bikes
on the back road past our place. Have actually turned the mower off, wondering what rhe noise was. 30 to 80 bikes riding past, out in the country can certainly sound big. Sounds like a squadron of helicopters flying over. I don't mind it at all, couple minutes and its all quite again. Only time they piss me off, is when one overtakes you flat out as close to you as possible. Scares the crap of you, if you don't see or hear them coming.
