Deep freeze Ice for longer trips

Hi, when we go on long trips say 1-3 weeks, we freeze 4x2 litre Milk cartons of water weeks before we go. This deep freezes the water, which will last longer.

I then run our 40ltr Engel as a freezer and the Techni Icebox 40ltr as a fridge.
Then each morning rotate 2 of the frozen 2 litre bottles which sit in opposite corners, this maintains the fridge (Icebox) at around 3 degrees. The ice doesn't melt much at all, you'll find that only about 5% of it has melted after 24 hours.

I also add a couple of ice bricks to sit around the top just to assist with extra cooling.
Works a treat, we did this on 3 week trip from SA up to Kunnunurra, Gibb River Rd, Broome, Tanami track back to SA.

i vacuum seal the meat 1-2 weeks before and put in deep freezer. this works great plus put the meat into meal sizes. Also i sucked it up and started using cans this also made a difference. Even now we own a frigde i still do these things it makes it easier.

I came up with a simple solution during my trip over WA last Xmas. Worked really well. My fiirst idea that I tried before leaving home did not work too well. But then all I did was use the free rubbish bin bag they gave me as part of the Valley of the Giants walk. I just put all my food in the big plastic bag. It was water tight. Not one with a hole in the corner!

Then just throw the ice in the esky, put the bag full of food on top of the ice, and leave the top of the bag hanging over the edge as you clip the lid on. So the food 'swims' in the freezing water, inside the bag, and stays nice and dry at the same time. The bag lasted the 12 days or so it took for me to drive from there, around the Pilbara, and back to Adelaide.

It also makes it very easy to get things out - just pull the whole bag out and sit it on your tailgate/table, instead of trying to find bits and pieces buried underneath. I don't think I had to do this because there was never much in there for just one person anyway. Also no need for any complicated shelving, or ice block containers, that just use up precious space.

Pack cans not glass bottles (they will pop the lid of when swimming around in water)
All your meat in a big tupaware container on top of the esky.
Leave the drain plug out so as it melts it will drip out.

When I didnt have a fridge (which I have to now go back to as mine got knocked off) I was running large blocks. For a weekend trip, deep freeze a shallow slice cooking tin with ice. Wrap a damp tea towel around it in store in the bottom of your esky, put party ice on top.

For a few days to a week, do a large block. I usually do the same tuppaware container that I use to put my meat in. Around 300L x 200W x 120H. Treat the same with tea towel and party ice.

For the ultimate esky camping use Dry Ice blocks wrapped in damp Tea towels + party ice, week + easy
