Hi All,

I am chasing some info on setting up an Electric Brake Controller in our Patrol.

Info I am chasing:

1) where is a good position to mount the unit so you don't knock yourself on the unit.
2) What is a good durable brand that is around at the moment?
3) Are they hard to fit or am I being a tight ass again and I should just pay somebody to do it.

Towing a camper trailer with 12" electric brakes.

Youve got short legs, left hand side under steering column.

Hayman reese is good although my dad just fitted a real flash digital one. I find more detail on it.

Your a tight ass!!

The guy next door just had to replace his Haymen & Reese one - only a couple of years old as it was faulting. But that could have just been a bad one in the batch

Mine is a Tekonsha, mounted under dash to the left of steering wheel.
Been there almost five years, no problems with the unit or placement.
I had a sparky wire it up for me, did a few other bits at the same time
so can't recall the cost.

Hi Traveller,

Thanks for that when I google Prodigy it come up with Tekonsha Prodigy I am assuming they are the same unit maybe?

I am thinking that is the way i will go, from the research I have done apparently it is very important to have the trailer brakes adjusted correctly? Should be interesting been years since i have adjusted drum brakes.

Hey Yobbo,
Sherah had one mounted in the same spot, just left of the steering wheel. I have install my new one on the trailer direct so any one using my trailer can use the braking system.

Just had a look at Tekonsha's site, mine is not there, so is an outdated model. I have heard they are
a good brand.(mine was in the father-in-laws car before I got it, he had one in each car)

In regards to adjustment, there are controls on the unit for speed of brakes coming on and how hard.
Instructions will be in the box, then test your set-up to see if it works for you.
I presume the drums will have normal adjustments, best to ask someone who can see it.
Getting the weight spread correctly in the trailer is vital as well.

Purchased a Prodigy unit today - Bride got a great deal. Now I just need to fit it to the Patrol before picking up the updated camper.

Will let you all know how it goes.

Prodigy and the Voyager are two of the models that Tekonsha make. Good units and the Gu I installed one in I put under the dash on the left of the stg column as well. Didnt get in the way.
If you install it yourself make sure you use good size wiring especially from the controller to the brakes as its a fair distance for voltage drop to occur which reduces braking efficiency.
