Ebay HID Driving Light Upgrade

Hey all,

I've been driving around with some stock standard Narva 175 ultima's for about 6 months now. Picked them up for $129 at repco- I must say, for what they do and their price, they're a bargain.

Although the casing and mounting system is fully plastic, I found that by putting a piece of soft rubber in between the base and the mounting point and then tightening, they stay aligned.

Anyway, I've always pondered getting one of those cheap HID kits from ebay to fit into these lights. However, I've been too cheap and even sets going for $90-$150 I've turned down..

BUT! I just saw a set for only $49.99, free postage and handling, H3, 4300k 35W HID! Fell to temptation and bought them on impulse..

Has anyone else retrofitted their halogen spotties with a HID kit? I'm just curious the know the results- my kit should arrive next week, so I'll report back on how it all goes..

As for the possibility of having to cut holes such that the HID bulbs will fit- for a cheap set of spotties like the Narva 175's, I won't be too worried...

Cheers!

I tried searching for HID in the forum, but because it's only 3 characters, it didn't like it :p

Can't wait for my kit to arrive!

I have the twin 175 driving and it improved the distance and side spread. On the Halogen I was able to just light up tree over 350m away, HID lite them up well. At normal speeds, 400m good lighting is what you want.

I had them in and here are the results. http://www.4x4earth.com.au/forum/electrical/3002-narva-ultima-175-a-2.html

One catch the bulbs you need are the H3C they are H3 size but compact in the back end. They will work. I have mine credited as the ballasts failed. Interested in yours and how they go. You may need to drill a new wiring hole otherwise the bulbs will twist

The kit I ordered is a H3 kit. Although I've contacted the seller, and they can give me a H3C kit for $100aud more...

In my mind, it's not worth the extra $. What is your opinion? What difference will H3C bulbs make vs H3 bulbs, besides the drilling of holes in the back of the driving light body?

Stay with the H3 bulb but see if the have a short back end, otherwise you will damage the bulb. The best way is to make a new cable outlet in the mould. I twisted the mount and then told of the other lamps.

Did you get digital or normal HID kit?

Yeah, I don't see any modifications to fit the cables being causing any drama's when I get them.

I'm pretty sure I ordered the digital ballasts.

I did a small mod to the present hole for the cables to pass through. The pressure on the wires can pull the bulb and the bulb has a plastic mount not steal like the halogens.

I haven't done it yet, I plan to install the HID's back in around April to June. I can tell you the issue I had and cost me 2 new bulbs over the kit. I will be drilling a new hole for the cables to come out of straight behind the bulbs and get a new rubber seal for the cables.

Just an update on the HID lights-

Kit arrived within a week, and installed this weekend.

25mm hole had to be cut through the back of the lights, however, the kit came with rubber grommets with pre sized holes for the wires to go through, so everything is snug fit.

I ordered 2x 4300k H3 bulbs- everything seems to work well- the 'spark' in the bulb occurs exactly where the element in the old halogen bulbs are, so the focusing point of the headlamps line up fine.

On observation, one of the bulbs seems whiter than the other. Minor problem, but I'm not complaining with a $49.95 HID kit.

I guess it's only a matter of how long they last, but they seem to do the trick.
