I have little interest the doing the cape thing at any time; but I certainly have no interest at all in going up there "alone" at the time of the year when wet season is about to start. ;)

Hey Yoshi
ULost2 has a point, getting a bit late in the season for a solo trip, depends on what floats your boat though, hope the young un is old enough to drive and make his own decisions, good luck & safe travels, let us know how you get on, (we are going in last week of August 2013 & will be looking for somw more companions at that time)

Really??? No interest?????? At all??? Kia won't make it??

If old mate researches well, he'll never be alone up there. October will be dusty anyway.

Hey Banshee!!:)

just go. i went last october and had a ball. there wasn't alot of people around but you see them now and then. the good thing is you get to choose campsites. the 15th is a little late, when we went it was the start of the month and some of the buisnesses were starting to wind down then.

Doing the Cape thing has never been on my agenda; even when I drove "rougher" 4x4s and lived in north Qld. I can just think of better places go in Aust. And the Kia would certain get there; and back!! I know a bloke who dragged a camper van up there with such a vehicle. Stuffed if I would though

As for the wet season about to start; I have lived in North Qld ;)

There are other reasons I would not go up there at this time of year but I will keep those to myself seeing the OP does not seem very interested in safety of his family

Thanks for supporting the commonsense Docsrandr. Maybe time for me to buy that fully geared up big truck others seem to have to have these days to get off the bitumen.

Yep Ian ( Lost ) it is about time you lashed out on a 4x4
The Kia would do the Development road to the Cape ok
but I think the OTL would sort it out .
Cape York is a great drive we luved it in 2010 , we plan to go again , as for doing it in October , I don't know .

My wife and i have just returned from doing the Cape, via the OTT - just us in the old cruiser. Had a great time, however i was surprised at how quiet it was on the OTT. We saw approx 5 vehicles from start to finish.

That suited me perfectly, and to be honest if there had been more people around i dont think id have enjoyed the trip half as much.

Travis.

Yoshy,
I did a 5week trip from melb to the tip back in late july-august this year in my GU Patrol as a solo driver, with my 4yr old son. Man what a adventure it was, excellent trip. Yes it is starting to get a bit late in the season, but there is heaps of travelers going both north & south to help out at any stage if u get into trouble at any stage. All can say is play it safe & try to hook up with another vehicle or more on your trip thats going in the same direction. You will meet other traverlers at Archer River camping ground & Bramwell Station or Bramwell Roadhouse to travel with. Make sure your vehicle is fully up to scratch & good recovery gear, it gets pretty rough out there, the tracks take out the toll on ya vehicle & have good maps of the area & plenty of spare water & food,
All the best mate, have a very happy trip & play it safe..........its a trip you will never forget

Hi Yoshy.
We live in north Qld and did the Cape again this year in the early part of the season and it wasn't to bad apart from some of the creeks/rivers being a bit high.
I think this time of year is a good choice for a solo trip as it would be drier (and dustier) and there will not be so many people to have to share the good camp sites with. With it being drier you should (hopefully) have shallower crossings, this isnt a big deal on most of the creeks but sure applies to Nolans if your solo. As long as the wet stays away and you just get the normal seasonal weather in the creeks it should be a good trip. Just be prepared to get off the OTL if we get and early start to the wet season.
As long as you are set up OK and have done your homework you should enjoy your trip.
Remember, that trips such as this are times when most people are willing to help you out if you have problems and while we shouldnt rely on it it is good to know there are a lot of off roaders about who know their bush craft and some are great bush mechanics.
I plan to do the Cape again next year but havent decided on when just yet but would expect it to be June/July or possibly a bit later.
It was a very busy season on the Cape this year and I envy you being able to do it when it will be a bit quieter. You should have some great campsites all to yourself if your lucky.
Have a great trip mate.
