Do 35’s put out your odometer

Hey guys,

I have just purchased a brand new 79 series dual cab and trying to put this conversation to bed, so I thought I would ask the professionals on here.

Once I take delivery in a few weeks i’m lifting the car and running 35s on her. I know my speedo will be out BUT my question is will my odometer be out as well?
I’m so conscious of re sale I don’t want to have my odometer reading 60,000km when it has really done less/more.
Apologies for the basic question but I have asked multiple people and even the guys at the tyre shop say that only the speedo will be effected.

Looking forward to ending the question once and for all lol!

Yes your oddometer and speedo will be out - if you are going to a larger diameter tyre the oddometer will read less than the actual km covered (same as speed - your speedo will read slower than your actual speed) . You will need to do the rolling diameter calculations for your original tyres and compare them with the bigger ones to work out exactly the difference.

Here is a tyre size calculator https://www.exploroz.com/vehicle/tyres/sizecalc.aspx

The other way is to compare your new odometer distance with a GPS.

But they will not necissarily be out by the same amount because the speedo is deliberately set to read lower than the actual speed you are traveling.
Often the speedo is correct after a tire size increase but the odometer will be out slightly.
Both my 4wds have slightly different end results after adding bigger tires

You can check the odometer on the 5km check sections on a lot of freeways. It will be lower usually by the percentage difference in the tyre diameter. Your car will also run out of puff in top gear going up a hill as well because it affects the gearing.

Agree with Matt

I’d take a educated guess from experience with tyres cars and speedometers

And say it will be closer to the correct reading than factory but to the other end ( reading less than you are travelling )

Cross reference with GPS but my 79 with 35s speedometer would read 100 and it would be traveling about 102-3 on the GPS

Exactly the same for me. When running my 32" A/T's, speedo is 'spot on' with the GPS, but with the 33's, 100klm on speedo is 102klm on GPS.

All really good points and you’ve all helped me out a lot! Thanks for all the input, I’m so reluctant to get the 35s just for that reason but everybody I talk to seem to think the 35s are the way to go!

definitely a good test when im on the freeway and I mark out all the 5km signs to see how far out I really am.

And interesting point someone actually said the same thing - because the car comes stock under powered and speedo reads slower than what you’re doing, putting the bigger tyres on in theory corrects it!

gentleman!! Thank you for all the help! I’m feeling confident in purchasing the 35s now.. next question MickeyThompson or maxxis hahah only kidding you don’t have to answer that

So why do you want 35". Do you need them or doing it just to please your mates? My truck runs 35s as standard - greatly over rated for 99% of use.

Keep in mind that you will lose a noticeable amount of power or torque, and your fuel economy will increase significantly. Though the engine revs will be lower on the highway.

And your already average brakes will also be worse , I drive 99.9 % of tracks on 32's, winch the other 0.1% but bigger and above all FAT tires look sik bro

I am running 33’s on myruiser and speedo reads under by about 4k/h at 100
Consider brake loss when fitting 35’s also
IMO 33’s are the sweet spot for the 70’s

well it was a toss up between the 33s and 35s, but 2 of my mates have 35s On their cruisers and have somehow convinced me..
I do a lot of riding and camping not so much hitting difficult 4x4 tracks but I do go off-road occasionally. And part of me what’s the biggest because I could never fit them on my old Navara. Honestly I just think it’s a male brain cell in me that says I have to, for no reason lol

I expected fuel increase. But significantly enough to get the shits and be surprised you think or just more than what it should be? How many kms you reckon you would get on a tank?

^ brakes will definitely need upgrading, we went with the hopper stoppers upgrade package but a fair few do upgrade kits for the 79 now as there factory setup is no good with bigger tyres

We realised that when traversing a steep loose rock decent, stood on the pedal to the point I was off the seat and could not get the wheels to lockup

So you dont need them - its more about seeing who has the biggest dick - Toyota drivers are like that:eek: - just have a look in the showers and save some money.

What a piss poor reply
We all do things to our vehicles that are probably not needed but give us pleasure in doing so EVEN the less fortunate non Toyota drivers like to do it too. Why not have a shot at those who have paid a premium to have metallic paint over white or alloy wheels or leather or _ or _or _ that they don’t need either but like

If he likes the look of 35’s and is prepared to deal with the issues that go with it that is his choice. Provide advice and commentary on what he wants but don’t shitcan the guy for it
