Hi all,

Today i went n got fuel in the 4B,I notice at the local Caltex there was TWO Diesels 1 was truck diesel and the other was premium diesel. There was also a price difference as well, truck diesel was $1.54.9 and premium diesel was $1.58.9. SO are you paying for the name PREMIUM or not. I'm thinking that we are paying for the name as, I'm not sure about alot of servos having 2 underground diesel tanks.
I know there is alpine diesel if that is it name.
I also asked at the counter whats the difference, answer was "I don't really know"So is it just a RIP-OFF by the oil companies or not.

Cheers Darren.

Well it sort of answers the question,Anti-foaming to me that means not so much detergent in it.And whats with the smell i would rather the smell of diesel than petrol(some might like smelling petrol)LOL.
Mmmmm is it all the big sell,i don't really know,I fuel the my work truck (semi trailer)at shell they don't have 2 bowsers saying truck or premium.
still the question is it a RIP-Off or not.

BP on the Gold Coast only have Premium Diesel. No option here. I must admit, mine smokes less on the BP Diesel.

Around my house if you go to the right servos you can get premium diesel for the same price as regular diesel.

It seems most servos have one or the other though.

Only difference is really detergents and antifoaming but BP premium has cetane booster in it so technically should produce more power.

Its kinda of like asking how long is a piece of string:D

Is it a Rip-off, as distinct from the general Australian petroleum pricing / taxation structure, which is a whole debate in itself, or is the addition of a "new" and "improved", whiter" and "brighter" and "now with Oxygen" OMO a rip-off or a genuine alteration with incurred costs or just plain marketing strategy ?

It appears to have got your attention so I would say that as a marketing strategy it has worked on some level.

Have a friend who worked for Unilever, they would change the formula of OMO in a minor way, claim an alteratoin as "New" and then market the hell out of it. Many brands even do it when they change the packet.

You , like the rest of us consumers , are really the only one that can decide if it's a rip off or not.

For me Caltex Vortec Diesel or Shell Bio-Dino with Methyl Ethyl Pootzel Hydride and now with Injector Whiteners is just basically diesel - its cost and does it do what I need are generally the deciding factors.

Cheers

Interesting...Shell do have a second diesel - Shell Extra. You can buy it in a limited range of places. If you google it Shell have a list on their site. They claim 3% better fuel economy in trucks...over the life of the engine.

I leave it to you to decide...

I only noticed the 2 differant diesles at our shell the other day, just happened to be at the premium pump when i pulled up so in it went.
A couple of cents dearer if i remember correctly but not enough to be bothered to move the ute to another pump.
Cant say that i have noticed a big power gain but am currently up to 425km and just hit 1/2 tank. This included a trip up to the Daintree and back, 300 odd km's on the highway and the rest around town... wil let u know how the bottom half of the tank travels!

Can i make a suggestion..........

If you want to care for your Diesel engine & the injectors for the long haul, then the answer is to add the Chem-tech Diesel treatment with every second tank. It does virtually what premium Diesel does plus lubricates the injectors, prevents algae growth in the tank, increases power and reduces exhaust smoke. I use it in my Ford Transit van, and have felt a noticeable difference. A 1 Litre container will last me about around 24 tank full, which works out around $1.30 per tank. Good value if you asked me and with the added benefits.

It does say on the container to add it every tank, but found if your driving heaps and filling your tank more than twice a fortnight then every 2 tanks is enough as you only need 1 ml per litre of the treatment.

Worth a try, cause just about all diesel engines will not discriminate on which diesel fuel you run on. The only Diesel to be careful with is the Bio-Diesel or B20 (20% bio) as some car manufactures will not recommend running above a 5% mix.

On the topic of additives, has anyone heard of putting 2 stroke oil in your tank of diesel?

Apparently its the latest craze and adds extra lube for a smoother running engine. A mate of mine is trying it out in his 1hz.

Not really a craze. And don't bother with yours. At 500K Km's, if theres damage, (yours sounds good) it's to late.

I run it in mine. And Fuel conditioner. Have never noticed a difference in performance or economy. But, being an old design engine,,,,, it makes me feel better and I know it can't hurt.

I've heard about that and it seems that some people swear by it and others reckon that it makes little or no difference.

Another thing that's a bit hit and miss is two bottles of engine stop leak in about half a tank for a short term fix on old diesel pumps with leaky seals. This holds up for about a month at a time on my car and I'll keep doing it until I get the time to pull the pump out and fix it properly.

I put Castrol Active 2T in mine every now and then. 300ml per 75ltrs does the trick. Engine runs quieter, but as mentioned, has no effect on power or economy, only lubrication for diesel pump components.

My diesel gets delivered in 3000L lots. Goes into everything Ford Ranger ute, 100 series cruiser, tractors ranging from 50 - 230 Hp, varying in age from almost 50yrs old right up to near new, and stationary pumps as well. My view....diesel is diesel, just put it in and drive
