Diesel gas v diesel power chip.

G'day all.

I've been doing a bit of homework on the lpg injection into the diesels. From what I gather I should get around 145kw out of my Navara with 30% better diesel efficiency (minus cost of lpg). With a diesel chip (DP or Steinbauer) they claim the same power but maybe 10% better fuel efficiency.

Has anyone got experience with either and with what engine?

Power chips are around a quarter of the price.

Hey Mate,

I just bought a 98 Hilux with the 3 litre diesel motor, it runs LPG injection.

There is a noticable power/response improvement with the LPG as opposed to without, but I can't quote figures for you. The gearbox certainly isn't doing me any favours in the speed department, but thats not what it's for! I took her out today down a local track after quite a bit of water and it went pretty hard. Maybe next time I'll turn off LPG and see what I think?

From what I was researching it should have 10-20% improvement over stock power, and (maybe) even better with the turbo engines from what I have read around the place.

If you want me to keep an eye on anything let me know, I'm not the most mechanically minded person as much as I try, and I have only had it a bit over a week either way.

To the rest of the forum I'll up some info on my car soon and see what you think, I want to organise some pics first! Pretty excited though.

From what I understand, the fuel (Diesel) is acually turned down a bit to allow for the LPG, they must be used at the same time for the best power, if you just use the diesel side you will acually have less power than standard. You cannot run on just LPG. The power increase is from the LPG giving a bigger bang, so the extra fuel useage is from the LPG side, just like in a petrol powered LPG car you use more LPG than petrol/diesel

Looking forwrd to the results and your thoughts on this havok01101. I have the 2000 5L diesel without a turbo and I could certainly use a little more power, without compromising the fuel economy that is, as I'm happy about the fuel use with this ol truck.

Hey LowLux, I'm pretty sure we have the same engine, I am pretty sure mine is a 5L.

I am a little curious about fuel consumption too, it's something I wan to get checked out when I get a service done next as I have a feeling mine is a little high, but I could be wrong.

Can you tell me how much do you get out of a straight diesel tank at the moment so I can put that into consideration? At the moment I seem to be getting around or under 400km out of the diesel tank, and just under double that for the LPG (roughly burn 1 tank of LPG per 2 of diesel).

I beleive my tanks are 66L and 30L respectively.

My consumption seems a bit high, but there are a couple of factors such as my dial going from 1/2 full to near empty in a handful of KM so I usually am filling a 1/4 full tank when it says fumes, and also I have been a little heavy on right foot because 1. it's slow and 2. it sounds good with the extractors/exhaust.

My post above was just after I got it, but I am a big fan of the power improvements I get from LPG, it takes the edge off the really slow takeoffs you come to love with out a turbo.

G'day havok011101.

As with yours, I have the 66lt tank and below is what usually happens with me.

I don't like the guage to go below 1/4 usually. I find that my guage will first move off the full mark at around 85 - 90k's then it goes down pretty rapidly to just above the 1/2 mark. At the 1/2mark, I've done around 320 - 330k's where once again it stays for quite a while. Then, I'll find it drop again rapidly to the quarter mark whereby I fill up again but by that time, I have done about 520 - 530k's and I still have about 16 - 18lt's left (according to how much fuel I put back in). The worse I've let it go, has been a hair-line above the empty mark, which is what I consider to be the safe useable point and I fill up again with about 10 - 12lt's left. At this point, I've done about 550k's hence, If I ran it to empty, in say an emergency situation, I should get around 600k's. Mind you too, this is around town driving.
