Glad I took the picture then lol, mate if looks like a bloody mess Heah...

Big mess mate. I couldn't believe it. That section after the step is muddy slippery hill, that is really dangerous. Just struggling to understand how DSE can let this happen. I think a lot of people who r inexperienced and go down this track will get themselves into big trouble as we discovered on the weekend and had to help a few others out that were not in group.

I think they should have gated it, rather than this mess, it's that dangerous sticky clay from memory.. I won't bother going back while it's in that state..

Mate Sent me a pick of a 4wd that rolled off the Jamieson - Woods Point Rd over the weekend, he said the flatbed just turned around, not sure if anyone was hurt but it was down a fair way it looks like they will need a crane...

Thanks for the pics Digger; it is a bloody mess....

If it is not going to be permanently closed, DEPI/Parks should gate both ends now & hopefully it will settle enough by Nov/Dec so it will be driveable & not dangerous.

Maybe not a bad idea to try and inform people to stay away from it over winter.

Looking at the pics, it looks like there's a lot of stone in the material they've pushed around. Given time to settle without to much traffic and with enough rain on it to wash away the clay/soil component I recon it'd end up a quite good surface.
Be a shame to see it canned.

No worries, yeh I think better they gate it then shut it down for good. To much of a good track to never be opened again. Walhalla was a mess in general a lot of tracks were grated and shouldn't of been making them a lot worse then they normally are. It was sooo muddy at times I thought we were at Toolangi. Lol

Hey Anth! Thanks to you and all the guys for your help in getting me out of trouble, and then for your advice and guidance to make my eventual try up the hill a success. It would be a pleasure to see you again on the tracks. In the meantime stay safe!

Hey Peter, good to see you on here. No worries was a pleasure as I said we never leave anyone stuck out on the tracks without helping them. Can imagine you learnt a lot that day that's the main thing. What did your mates say when you got back to camp?

Hey Allan,

Looks like you dd a shite load to clear the track looking at those pics.

Agreed, it should have been a seasonal closure & still should.
Very dangerous on that left section, slippery & if you don't make it, you go left off the side as you go back.
If its still open, I think it's a summer track. Great track!

Gidday Anthony; totally agree that it really should be a 'summer track', but unlikely to happen, as I bet there will be people heading up there next weekend after reading this thread....:(

From what I can see in the photos it seems the same as most tracks they freshly grade that get hit by large amount of rain , they go mushy and become a slip and slide

I'd image with time it will settle . Given the surface texture is the only issue with the track ?

Hey Digger. Well... I did say to them I was going to go back with one of your guys (Scotty?), and they did wait at the top of the track for 1.5h according to them. But by the time I got back they were wondering a) how they were going to go looking for me and b) how they were going to break the news to my wife LOL!! I did learn a lot from the day (thanks) and I now have something to give my mates stick about forever :O

Isnt the whole purpose of the DSE to preserve the natural environment ?? Walhalla is/was such a beautiful area and that rock ledge was a natural formation that they have destroyed and by the looks of it they've done far more damage than any amount of 4wding would ever do.

No that's not there job at all.

It's their job to keep trade free of obsticals and maintain them to a level that it can be used a fire access. That's it. It's all about the fire access.
But what they should of done is either gated it after they sent the dozer down or waiting until after the long weekend so there would be less traffic over it.

Either way they aren't done with that track, it's getting closed completely from the top end, so it's will be one way in and 1 way out.

From the Parks Victoria site..

Rangers have varied and interesting jobs. Responsibilities vary from park to park but ultimately all rangers are responsible for looking after our parks and park visitors.

On a day to day basis, rangers:

Manage parks along with the visitor facilities and cultural assets found in parks, Manage staff, volunteers and contractors, Work with stakeholders and manage issues, Provide information and services to customers and stakeholders, Manage budgets, Respond to emergencies such as bushfires, floods and search and rescue operations.

Rangers need to work well with people, have good planning and research skills and a passion for the environment.*

DSE and park rangers are different things.

Given the work they have done to date on this track it doesn't make sense for them to close it. Why waste countless dollars and then close it, wouldn't they just close it without doing all the work!
