Thanks again Shane for organizing this trip. I enjoyed myself and I think we all had a nice day out. Weather was perfect and it was great to meet some lovely people and catch up with 'old' frends. It was a lot of bitumen for a small amount of sand, but we had fun looking for it! And we made the most of what climbs we could find.

The young ones entertained us again with their zest for adventure - the 'break-a-ways' - Rhys with his Rangie, toddler Kelli and Team Ekki's pet dog (Max, I think).

So here are few memories for the crew, with my silly captions, as usual!

1 - The three break-a-ways with some of their minders
2 - 'Damn, caught again. These legs are just too short. But in a few years . . .'
3 - 'Now it's my turn!'
4 - Hey dad, look, dog gone!'
5 - 'Now look boy, you pull a trick like that again and I'll . . .'

Rhys made it look easy. No wheel spin at all! So we all had a shot, but other than the cheats, who barelled up at a zillion km/hr, the rest of us couldn't keep our grip and ended up spinning the wheels.

1 - Climb #1 - bring it on. I want more!
2 - 'Too easy. Let's try somethin' different . . .'
3 - 'What the . . .' x 4
4 - 'Now come on mate, what's your game?'
5 - 'OK gang, take a seat. Our leader's waiting!'

1 - 'Does that beach need my fourby? Hmmm. Maybe not today.'
2 - Guess who left their camera home.
3 - 'Here she comes again. Where can a dog hide around here?'
4 - 'Yeah Max, she's a real pain! Come on, back in the car. You'll be safe there.'

We had a few yarns. I was on my glider gig again, until the 'big boss' had had enough!

1 - 'There was this monster drop-off to our right . . .'
2 - 'The back end started sliding sideways. And then . . .
3 - 'Nadia jabbed me in the ribs and woke me up. Just in time too!'
4 - 'Can I borrow your hat Millsy. That'll fool her!'
5 - 'Here's my chance. Wait for me Max!'

The surfies had their moments;
1 - 'Now just watch this. I reckon I can conjure something up here.'
2 - 'Is that a ride mate? Left or right?'

And we found another little climb a bit further down the coast, with a chance to articulate;
3 - '10 points for the artichokes.' 'Minus 10 for dirt in my face!'
4 - 'I'm a Cooper's man!' 'Yeah, we knew that already. You didn't have to do that!'

OK Rhys, here's dinner for you;

1 - First the entree - 'Beach Salad' - seaweed with lime(stones), and then . .
2 - The main course - the step up, ramp and the fly-over.

There's some excitement for you.

'Where are you man? All hung up back there?'

3 - 'And stay away from this shite!'

( Water can be tricky, mud can be fun, but water + mud = sludge = expensive fun )

4 - 'Now just get me home ol' girl.'

Also some good photos you have Millsy,
it was good to catch up again!

Thanks. You too. What time did you finally get home?

I was pretty slow at work yesterday, and just didn't have the herbs to do any photos last night. A bit better today. Should be up and going again by tomorrow I hope! It was a big day out - bigger than Burra!

Speaking of Burra - I am thinking of doing a trip out north east of Burra one weekend, if any-one is interested in coming along. We would drive up to Burra Gorge on Friday night for the first camp. Next day a big loop out into the 'never-never', north and east, past Collinsville and Ketchowla. Further up to Lillydale station and then east and south east to camp next to the creek in the Chowilla Game Reserve, 30 minutes north of Renmark. A lovely spot -water in the creek, various birds ( including the mighty wedgies, a kangaroo or two and emus, and jumping fish. Then on the Sunday, down into Renmark, across to the border about 20 minutes east of Renmark, and a drive back down through the sandy tracks in the western end of the Sunset Country. This includes part of the iconic Border Track to the north of Pinnaroo. Across the Mallee wheat farms, and through little ghost towns to Mannum on the Murray, and back home.

Might put something up in the trips section for a weekend in the September holidays.

If people are interested we could make it a three day event, making use of the October long weekend, and camp Sunday night at Pheeneys camp ground, on Pheeney's Track. This would allow a few more hours to explore some great sandy tracks with a loop back to Pheeney's at the end of the day. Some might head back on the Sunday at lunch-time, and some might like to do the extra sand driving and camp at Pheeney's on Sunday night.

Hi,we got back home around 10.40pm,all very buggered!!
It was a very big day,we where so close to getting a cabin at Marion Bay for one night, but decided against(but it was very tempting!!).
That out back trip sounds good,we may tagalong. Is it all tent camping,or can you take campertrailer? Is it going to be hot & dry at that time of year? There will be a few more questions closer to when you post up in trips section!
We just want to be well prepared.Wilkat.

:) I am glade everyone enjoyed themselves on sunday I am sorry some farmer put a dozer on the track a month before. I was speaking to the counicl roads manger on monday at Brentwood and the south coast road haded been graded since christmas time and there was some good sections for 4wding. He told me the road is very rough and plenty of sand and some rocky sections that can only be done by a 4by. If I had known that before hand we would have gone and done the south coast road and not the Pt Vic to Rickyabee track.

Millsy I would be interested in doing the trip you want to plan mate but if we are staying in each camp site over night I would swag it. :D:D:D

You made very good time considering the distance you had to cover to get home! Well done. I was home not much before you, at about 10.10pm.

You should be OK with a camper trailer. Farm tracks for the trip through the sheep station country, north east of Burra. Dangalli Conservation Park is a place I have never seen, and hence the trip. Tracks through there might be a bit rough. I don't think there would be any sand up there, but we will see! Chowilla Game Reserve has a lot of clay. Not a problem if dry, but muddy in the wet. If too muddy it will be closed and we will use the Renmark Caravan Park instead.

Sunset Country is a mixture of firm, rocky tracks and quite sandy tracks with sand hills. But quite navigable with a camper trailer, provided the trailer is appropriate weight compared to the power of your motor. BEK from Melbourne had no probs with his camper trailer, but he did have a big 4.2 litre motor in his GU Patrol, and his trailer was on the smaller side of average.

I will find a few pics to show you what to expect. But bear in mind that the first few pics, north of Burra, were taken in February on a 40 degree day. I would expect there to be a lot more live vegetation in September, just after the winter.

I find this region area a joy to drive through for the rugged and isolated scenery. The Sunset Country is a lot softer on the eye, as you can see in the last few pics. And what the Dangalli has to offer I will be finding out for myself, as a first timer out that way.

I need to do some more research, especially regarding safety and emergency planning. I have a map I can dig out to find out where the repeater stations are out in the north east. and what frequencies they operate on. I will invite my mate Tiny along. He has an excellent HF radio and knows how to use it. He is a volunteer with the Australian 4x4 HF radio network. If he can't come along I am considering purchasing a HF myself. And then of course learning how it all works. Tiny will help me with this.

Would be great to have you along Shane! As I said above I still need to do some research to make sure its all feasible and safe. Main thing I think is to check the condition of the tracks into and through Dangalli since I have never done them. So a a few phone calls needed, and trying to get info from anyone that can provide it. A GPS will be essential. I allready have a few of the 250,000 topo maps of the area, but I think I need at least one more.

Its always fun to use Google Earth to check out the tracks from about 500 feet above ground level. You can get a bit of an idea like this.

Shane, are you mainly interested in the October long weekend, since I am assuming you would not have to work on the Saturday of a 3 day weekend?

Hi again,
Our campertrailer is a Jayco Hawk it about 16ft long travel length, width about 7ft,travel hight about 5.5ft & it weighs about 1040kg unloaded,it is a outback/4wd make.
We have had it across Aust about 6 times,on corrigated dirt & sandy rds/tracks. We haven't done any sand dunes before so that might be interesting!!
Im hoping that this would be ok to take ,if not we'll have to use our 8 man tent (its not to bad for kath & I, its Kelli & all her stuff you have to lug around.)
But if you can find those pix of some of the places that'll be great.
Also whats the safety of all our gear, while at some of these camp spots?
Also do you know how many ks it'll be?
We would like to camp or see the Murray River at some time, would be good, just an idea?
I suppose when you've had time to research these areas,we'll know more at what to expect. Its sounds like a very interesting trip,we looked at the proposed tour in our 4wd map & looks like mostly dirt rds:cool:,& hopefuly peace & quite:cool:(apart from Kaths snoring:eek::),only joking)

I have just been browsing the tracks on Google Earth Satellite view. Quite a few tracks through and around the Dangalli Conservation Park, and the Chowilla Recreation Reserve joining on the southern side. Also have some maps that I picked up from the Berri tourist information centre last year of the Dangalli Park. A few homesteads scattered around the area, and one right in the middle of the Dangalli Park. Always nice to know there is a habitated homestead not far away.

Also looked through various photo files of past trips. Need to hit the sack now because I have to get up early to start work in the morning. So will pick out a few photos tomorrow night and post them up.

The sandhills are not too steep, but you do have a fairly heavy trailer! And in September there should still be lot of moisture in the sand, so it will not be too soft and fluffy, as it is in the middle of summer. I have some July photos from last year which will give you a good idea of what the sandy tracks in the Sunset Country will be like. I love these tracks! Paradise on Earth in my opinion. But nothing like what you have over on the east coast. Completely different feel about it. What sized motor do you have?

I am looking at getting the hemma gps with all the troppo maps in it so i can plan trips away and go exploring in the hills close to home and have a good look for 4x4 tracks that are open. Then I can put few tracks on here for everyone.

3.4 ltr v6,as you know duel fuel petrol/lpg.
We have had the van up big hills, but not sand hills,so looks like we might be taking the tent.Sand dunes not sure about, dirt/mud/sand tracks might be ok.We'll see as more info comes out.

If I am doing the trip on my own I will swag it if I have some one coming with me it would be a tent. That way its easy to pack up and set up every night when we are not in the same camp 2 nights in a row.

That sounds like a great idea.
I have been trying to work out my downloaded ttmaps that'll work in my totom for tracks, but just can't get it to work. Apparently it does work(on other peoples tomtoms),I think I've got some files in the wrong files,if that makes sense. I'm not very savvy in this area.......
