UHF fitted seems to be working... (Lights up any way lol) just have to check the fluids in the morning and right to go. see the southerners at 5.45 at colonnades. UHF 10,
Also some good photos you have Millsy,
it was good to catch up again!
Thanks. You too. What time did you finally get home?
I was pretty slow at work yesterday, and just didn't have the herbs to do any photos last night. A bit better today. Should be up and going again by tomorrow I hope! It was a big day out - bigger than Burra!
Speaking of Burra - I am thinking of doing a trip out north east of Burra one weekend, if any-one is interested in coming along. We would drive up to Burra Gorge on Friday night for the first camp. Next day a big loop out into the 'never-never', north and east, past Collinsville and Ketchowla. Further up to Lillydale station and then east and south east to camp next to the creek in the Chowilla Game Reserve, 30 minutes north of Renmark. A lovely spot -water in the creek, various birds ( including the mighty wedgies, a kangaroo or two and emus, and jumping fish. Then on the Sunday, down into Renmark, across to the border about 20 minutes east of Renmark, and a drive back down through the sandy tracks in the western end of the Sunset Country. This includes part of the iconic Border Track to the north of Pinnaroo. Across the Mallee wheat farms, and through little ghost towns to Mannum on the Murray, and back home.
Might put something up in the trips section for a weekend in the September holidays.
If people are interested we could make it a three day event, making use of the October long weekend, and camp Sunday night at Pheeneys camp ground, on Pheeney's Track. This would allow a few more hours to explore some great sandy tracks with a loop back to Pheeney's at the end of the day. Some might head back on the Sunday at lunch-time, and some might like to do the extra sand driving and camp at Pheeney's on Sunday night.
Hi,we got back home around 10.40pm,all very buggered!!
It was a very big day,we where so close to getting a cabin at Marion Bay for one night, but decided against(but it was very tempting!!).
That out back trip sounds good,we may tagalong. Is it all tent camping,or can you take campertrailer? Is it going to be hot & dry at that time of year? There will be a few more questions closer to when you post up in trips section!
We just want to be well prepared.Wilkat.
You made very good time considering the distance you had to cover to get home! Well done. I was home not much before you, at about 10.10pm.
You should be OK with a camper trailer. Farm tracks for the trip through the sheep station country, north east of Burra. Dangalli Conservation Park is a place I have never seen, and hence the trip. Tracks through there might be a bit rough. I don't think there would be any sand up there, but we will see! Chowilla Game Reserve has a lot of clay. Not a problem if dry, but muddy in the wet. If too muddy it will be closed and we will use the Renmark Caravan Park instead.
Sunset Country is a mixture of firm, rocky tracks and quite sandy tracks with sand hills. But quite navigable with a camper trailer, provided the trailer is appropriate weight compared to the power of your motor. BEK from Melbourne had no probs with his camper trailer, but he did have a big 4.2 litre motor in his GU Patrol, and his trailer was on the smaller side of average.
I will find a few pics to show you whatt to expect. But bear in mind that the first few pics, north of Burra, were taken in February on a 40 degree day. I would expect there to be a lot more live vegetation in September, just after the winter.
I find this region area a joy to drive through for the rugged and isolated scenery. The Sunset Country is a lot softer on the eye, as you can see in the last few pics. And what the Dangalli has to offer I will be finding out for myself, as a first timer out that way.
I need to do some more research, especially regarding safety and emergency planning. I have a map I can dig out to find out where the repeater stations are out in the north east. and what frequencies they operate on. I will invite my mate Tiny along. He has an excellent HF radio and knows how to use it. He is a volunteer with the Australian 4x4 HF radio network. If he can't come along I am considering purchasing a HF myself. And then of course learning how it all works. Tiny will help me with this.
What sized motor do you have?
I am looking at getting the hemma gps with all the troppo maps in it so i can plan trips away and go exploring in the hills close to home and have a good look for 4x4 tracks that are open. Then I can put few tracks on here for everyone.
