Couple of Tyre questions - Tyre changes and split Rims

Hi,

First off does anyone do their own tyre changes? You know taking tyres off rims with bead breakers and tyre levers. How do you find it? I'm debating weather to buy the gear or just pay someone else to do it.

Can you still get split rims? Everywhere I have asked says no. But I imagine they say no because the only sell rims for tubeless tyres.

Yes you can still get split rims. But there few and far between, except for full time country vehicles. Can't imagine why they say you can't get them.

I do have my own tyre changing kit, but the only time we do it, is if we split or rip the carcass out in the bush and we have already gone through our spare. As soon as we hit civilisation again, it's off to the tyre folk for a balance.

Changing a tyre itself actually isn't that hard. 30+ degree heat takes it toll on you, but otherwise, two people can knock over a change in around 15min, not including air-up time.

Don't recommend you do it unless you have too. Quite simply, if you can't balance them, they can misbehave.

You probably won't find aftermarket splits anywhere but there are plenty of people selling their factory splits all the time. Put it in a wanted ad on this forum?

Forgive me for putting this thread up...just need some advice if you dont mind it .just bought some 18" wheels for my 4X4 LXR and wanted to now how big (tire) can i go without the tire rubbing? stock is 225/55 16 i'm trying to stay away from low profile tires because they have a lot more road noise and you feel every bump in the road. would 225/50 18 be too big?? a website says this size would make my speedo 4.3% too slow. don't care if the speedo is a little off, just want a comfortable ride without rubbing or sensor issues. Thanks a lot!
