Coils Over Leaves

In need of some help..

I've always been told that coils are better than leaves, for ride comfort.. However, a mate of mine told me the other day that you can actually get coils installed, as well as a leaf-sprung setup, using the coils for a regular ride, but when heavy loads are being carried, you can rely on the leaves.. is this the case? And if so, how much would you be looking at paying for something like that?

What your talking about is a coil helper spring, what they do is remove a leaf or two out of the leaf spring pack (usually in the middle of the spring pack) and then install the coils, but what they don't mention is that when the coil spring goes in it brings the combined spring rate back to what it was before hand, so there is really no benifit in doing this and it will not increase your wheel travel as well, and then you will need to replace your shocks as the shocks will not be compatable with the coil springs as leaves have a natural bult in shock absorbsion, to put coils in successfully you need to replace the leaf springs with coil springs altogether plus shocks, then you have to get mod plates fitted and so on and so on. it is a big job as legally you cannot weld to your chassis rails, so finding the correct mounting point can be difficult, so most people go the coil over shock road, but have you got the room under there?
