Well i just got my first service done at toyota and told them that the clutch is shuttering when takeing off slow thinking that maybe just needs adjustment however they told me it needs a new clutch i dont understand how can this be and should it be covered by warranty.......also haveing troubles with the arb air lockers not engadgeing when i turn the switch on have to do it about 2 or 3 times before they turn on and then im finding the compresser comeing on and off when im driveing has any one else experienced these problems. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...:)

Hi Cakeh....!

A Shuddering cl;utch would indicate a collapsed pressure plate, replacing the clutch totally ,not usually essential unless the uneveness of the pressure plate has worn the friction plate unevenly - normally this sort of thing would be covered under warranty , but I don't know where you stand with some of the mods like the tyres, if they are outside what they call standard then they might say well such an alteration may have contributed to the breakage, if they have supplied the vehicle from new with these modifications/options then you have them by the goolies . The switching problem to the lockers sounds like either a switch problem, (replace) or there is a faulty wire or connection . If toyota wont come to the party then take up the issue with whoever did the work on your vehicle .

Let us know how you get on:cool:

While they have their crystal ball out...did they mention to you WHY they say it needed a new clutch??? Is the rear main seal leaking, causing the clutch to be oil contaminated???? Ask them why it requires replacement, and if it does why it isn't covered under warranty......

Thanks for the reply bushnut all the extras were fitted by toyota including the lockers and tyres im going back there tuesday will let u no how i get along. One thing they did try throwing on me was the stove arb fitted would have to be chased up by me, but i think that is wrong i paid toyota 57 000 dollars and they got arb to do the work so in my appion they should be responsible in getting it fixed its like if u build a house and u use a builder u move in and all the ceiling joints start cracking u dont go chaseing up the plasterer yourself u chase the builder who u paid who in turn would chase the sub contracter who did the work... thanks again for the advice much appreciated......

Do a Search on Statatory Warranties (Google) and go armed with that info - If they have marked it up and onsold it to you it is there problem. Do a search go in armed with the facts.

Clutch - Well it could be burnt out but unlikely - do you ride the clutch when out wheeling?? You would be hard pressed to burn it out in 10 000km but it is possible.

Cheers

will google that now cheers, have owned other 4wds a lot older and never had any clutch problems before generally use low 4 when in any real soft sand or any big hill climbs being the way the car is geared it is hard to get it moving in soft sand use 3rd low when going threw indian head at fraser for instance i dont no if that could cause problems but i dont think i would get threw in high 4 even in first with out a huge run up and very high speed...just the way it seems geared and the amount of power

i know that the new navaras and pathfinders have dual mass flywheels in them, the earliest i have changed a clutch kit and flywheel in these is 800kms. but the vehicle comes in without a clutch or shudder. perhaps the hilux use a dual mas flywheel as well, if thats the case, then itl be warranty for sure.

i work for nissan/holden and we have replaced clutches under warranty on vehicles that have done about 90,000kms, so theres no reason why youshouldnt get the clutch under warranty, esp since they fitted the arb accessories as an option they were selling.

it may be different for toyota, but the only way we will NOT replace a clutch/gearbox/diff, is if we find out that the person has been doing burnouts (normally bald tyres and rubber spray in the guards, other than that, we would normally do it under warranty. there has been cases where ppl have been towing say a trailer that is too heavy for the load the vehicle is capable of, other than that, most of the time there warranty

Yeah clutch sounds like they should warrant it for sure. The lockers not engaging sounds to me like you may have an air leak as this will cause the compressor to come on and off while driving.
Hope it works out for you.

I think to days 4wd is no were near as well built as yrs ago !! Cost 's and on going money hungry big mogals , have taken out quality control . So many times we will hear of dogie cars being produced ! Remember WARRANTY , they supplied it to you , you paid for it , make them on nor it . Speak to consumer fair , or MTA if they bullshit you . I bought a new nissan and 20.000ks found a noise in the gear box when 4wing and the result was the wrong gear box oil put in . Had to pay extra at that service because I was 10,000ks from home . So much for predelivery check , hay ! As for driving on sand at Indian head ,I would have been in high rang second . I find it gives you the best momentum and power for sand driving ( just a thought ) Good luck .

I purchased a new Navara last year and afterwards started hearing about all the clutch issues people were having. In doing my research I found that people were having issues with the 05 onwards Hilux clutches as well. I have heard that some Nissan dealers will replace under warranty, some need to be pressured and other just outright refuse, so I'm guessing it will be the same with Toyota dealers.
Here is a link to an Aus based "complaints" type forum where people are discussing the problems they have had with Hilux clutches.

I agree with rum honey, the 4wds these days are not built as well. 2005 seems to be the year when the "tuff trucks" started to take a down hill turn.

All the best with your clutch issue, hopefully your dealer looks after you.
