What rig do you run? My inlaws own an '03 F250 and he chipped that. The power it puts out now is friggin awesome!! It has about 6 different settings on it too so he can adjust from "power" through to "economy", if there is such a thing in a 7.3l Turbo Diesel....

I too am considering power enhancement. I have been torn between the dtronic, DP and Steinbauer. I run a current VX Prado towing a Kimberly Kamper so am just trying to get back at least one gear while cruising. I have been told the DP chip is great however it doesn't work properly unless i put a taipan exhaust on. I was also told that the DP modify's exhaust gas tems etc and apparently this is bad. I have been leaning toward the Steinbauer but only because Tony Motson who is the turbo expert in Brisbane whom i trust completely says so. Its all over my head. I have seen all sorts of tech wizard explanations that are 20 feet over my head so i'm still deciding.

Does anyone else out there have a Prado with a tuning module fitted?

Talk to the guys at On Track 4wd Centre, they do all the chips and will tell you which is best.

AMMS at Sandgate are bloody great at doing tunes etc they also have the added bonus of the onsite 4 wheel dyno. I beleive they are doing the whole package including the exhaust, chips and tunes.

If you got the Prado, go with the Steinbauer based on all the comments on the New Hilux forum about the chips on the D4D engine. The DP has had heaps of limp home problems.

The advantage of the Steinbauer is that it plays with injection timing and has a wiring harness to each injector so it can do this.

The others just play around with fuel pressures and I see mine hits 120,000 KPa in standard form on my Car PC which monitors the engine ECU via OBDII. Not really the way you should be doing it I reckon!

Well thanks very much for that. I do feel a lot better about the Steinbauer. I have known Tony Motson for many many years and know he wouldn't lead me a stray but there are so may different chips out there these days.

Amazing how things change in a few months. If you are a Toyota Prado, 2005 and on Hilux or 100 Series driver with a D4 D Diesel engine, I might have a solution for you. I have just ordered in a new German built chip from overseas which wires in the same way as the Steinbauer. As soon as it is arrives, I am going to fit it and go to Motsons mentioned elsewhere in this thread to get my truck on the Dyno and see how it performs. All feedback from UK Hilux owners has been very good so I don't expect there to be any problems. If it is a goer, I will be arranging a group buy. Th good news is that subject to exchange rates and the like, the anticipated introductory price will be $795 plus freight from Brisbane which is a lot better than the Steinbauer's $1,490 RRP!

This will be subject to a minimum order quantity of 5 units to get off the ground, but I think from the interest I have received, this will be easy to achieve.

Umm interesting - wasn't one of the chips I think it was the Steinbauer able to override all the inbuilt protection systems in the cars? I was under the impression the other chips still used the existing protection setups within the cars ECU.

Something to serioulsy keep in mind.

If you are going to chip a Diesel engine you should put in a Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge. (EGT)

More fuel means hotter combustion temperatures assuming the rest of the engine is stock.

Without an EGT gauge you won't know when to back off. Factory ECU generally don't measure EGT.

Cheap insurance really.

I can't speak for the Steinbauer but the chip I'm importing respects all of the Toyota saftey limits on the D4D engine.

Good advice, I will look into fitting one. I have played around with an OBDI interface with my car and it does display data for exhast gasses with some software but when the chip is queried to find out what data is available with more sophisticated software, it does not report exhaust temp as being available. Whether the data being returned is correct or not, I don't know.

What brand is the chip you are importing? what backing does it have?

The Chip will be called the VMN Diesel Tuning Kit in Australia and it has my personal backing and support via VMN. Here is a photo:

Notice the wiring harness. You unplug the injector plug, plug the wire into one cable and plug the other cable onto the injector. After that it is just a matter of connecting two wires to the battery and you are away.

This wiring scheme is the same used on the Steinbauer and the Toyota manufactured TTE chip (which is not available in Australia). With the research I have done, this is the preferred method of wiring in a chip to modify injector timing. I really need to wait and see the test results and if it does not work out, I'll be sending it back. However, from all accounts, I think it will be staying in my truck.

Hope it works out for you, does look like a steinbauer though so it should work well.

Thanks mate. That was my thought too!

All we need now are decent petrol ones, as the current crop on the market do nothing!

I would love to put a supercharger or twin turbo on my Prado, but by the time you add the $$$$$ it is cheaper to do a V8 conversion, with the same gain.
