Sadly that turned out to be a bugger of a trip for everyone with 2 cars having issues, like the saying says if its got , something I can't remember, or wheels it will give trouble.
What turbo was installed? original or aftermarket and was the old one dead or just an upgrade due to mileage and performance ?
Great that everyone actually got home with the cars

The replacement was Kinugawa OEM replacement with a mild high flow billet compressor wheel to fatten the torque curve and compensate for bigger tyres and weight added as I modded my ute. I did have a 9 blade turbine wheel fitted to reduce rotating mass in the CHRA.

I had driven about 3500km before starting this leg of the trip. The issue started when regularly working the ute north of 3000rpm for a sustained effort to crest dunes off track. Having taken time to reassess and bounce off mechanics and engineers at work I will be going back to an 11 blade turbine wheel to slow the speed of the turbine slightly.

Not sure what make of turbo just yet. Kinugawa will warrant the turbo and rebuild it. But I have lost confidence in thier gear. The gains I got from this turbo were exactly what I wanted. Perhaps I will buy the compressor wheel and have someone rebuild and hi flow the turbo I have on the ute now and balance the rotating mass at a speed I am unlikely to reach. Or another option is fit a garret 2554r or 2560r. I think the 2560 is more than I need tbh, so the 2554 is most likely if I go that option.

I am working through all of this now so I can make the right choice and be ready for Fraser in March.

Yeah Matt, I think that is where I might land. A bit more work to fit up, but the garret has a ball bearing CHRA too. So more responsive. I need to work through how I will set this up properly.
