offspray I use a Husky 570 and if I think it's warranted will occasionally take the little saw along too just in case but not very often.

I always carry the chainsaw in the camper but only occasionally in the truck. It depends on where we are going.

Have a Husky rancher 50cc , 20' bar, had it 20 odd years and still going strong, carry it in a Stihl carry case, the only thing that stihl is worthwhile - I can put chainsharpening file and guide, screw driver, ring spanner, a cleaning cloth and a small container of bar lube in there as well . When I had the wagon , where it was accessable at the back, now I have the ute anywhere in the back , usually where I can get to it easy .

Saw

ALWAYS - everyday - carry a Stihl MS260 with 18" bar - have cleared a number of fallen trees off tracks and usually travel remote areas alone. Have had very reliable service from a number of Stihl saws over the years but might look at the sewing machine (Husqvarna) next time just for change. A mate uses a Husqvarna and likes it - it seems to have better fuel capacity, our two saws perform similarly apart from fuel consumption.

My saw fits between the back of my middle row of seats and the drawer unit I built and fitted, easy access from passenger door.

"Stihl MS260 "

I own one of these too,Ive been through the High Country and never needed one, then recently my trip to Woods Point i decided to hav a look at Lazarini Spur TK at about 5.30pm by myself just on dark. The rest of the group had FOOD on there mind and stayed back at camp..
I cannot remember the track (maybe Army tk) but it was about 3kms in and a bank to my right and drop off to my left,no room to turn around,at least a 2km reverse.Lucky i threw in the saw this trip,a big bloody tree had fallen across the track ....

Cheers

Also looking at getting one to throw in the back when out in the bush. Would have come in handy today.

Any suggestions or recommendations on bar length ( now that's going to open up some discussion ;););) ) What is realistic and what is just plain overkill. I am not out to clear 3 foot diameter trees from tracks, just the usual fallen stuff and maybe for firewood when camping.

yeh gday mate,
i just chuck it in the tool box in the back of the 100 series tie the box down and off I go. I just grabbed a cheap chinese piece of crap. Does the job did not see the point in buying a sthil or husky if it was only going to be used bugger all...

I have a little stihl 18" bar, Balsy little thing will cut some huge logs, use it for firewood always and the small size means it fits in the tool box easily. Would recomend buying a reputable brand, not bunnings crap... you get what you pay for. AND when you do buy one get a file sharpener, and use it after each time you do a decent amount of cutting, means you can get it out and use it when you need it.

I have a 20 year old Echo. Always starts ok (but don't like to say that). Used it on the tracks for the first time at Dawson City. Trimmed a few roots of a fallen tree to make a bit extra room to squeeze through. Chain didn't like the dirt and crap amongst the roots but chain was also 20 years old and already missing several teeth so it owes me nothing. Store it in the back behind safety barrier.

Cheers

Got a bunnings special, ryobi I think but its cheap and if I bugger it in the bush its not going to bankrupt me. Having said that I always make sure the teeth are sharpened before going out and do service it as much as possible so it doesn't let me down, I hope!!!

size does matter

might suggest 450mm bar, powerhead is optional but i prefer to use a stihl 46 it is a little chunky but capable of felling, cutting off burrs. a bar that size can get you out of trouble but we see to many people not using ppe and the chainsaw is one dangerous piece off kit.

Ppe

Yeah when chainsaws attack!!- they really do attack! Always use ear and eye protection, seen some idiots in thongs and shorts cutting... what a stupid way to drain all of your blood out of a hole in your leg. Most definately get the PPE. You only need it once and its paid for it's self.

And you don t need the CHAINsaw to need the PPE, I believe it hurts like hell, if thats all you have to worry about. (Obviously NO personal experience here!)
