Cape Melville National Park

Hey guys

Hoping I could get some information on the track into Cape Melville National Park (Cape York). Has anyone done it recently and how technical is it? I’m asking because I have a young one on board and don’t want anything too extreme just yet.

Is a snorkel necessary? I read there are creek crossings, although I’m not sure how difficult they are. I’ve got a high clearance vehicle, and enough experience- just checking how family friendly it is, with a young one.

Windy as hell this time of year, only open August to Dec, sandflys at Croc camp are bad, Crocs are not shy at all - people have been taken out of tents there. No snorkel needed coming from Kalpower, big snorkel needed if coming via Starke. Tracks have deep soft sand so prepare accordingly. Not a family friendly place - more hardcore fishos type place. If you don't want 'adventure' then I'd go elsewhere. Try Eddy's camp at Elim Beach via Hopevale or Chilli beach if you can get a booking for the East coast.
