Can an intercooler be too small?

I’m looking into water and air. What ever way I go has to be done before the July school holidays lol so it’ll be soon. Lol
You will definitely beat me then! Water to air seems like a neat good option. As I said I just don’t like the electrics and possibly of water coolant getting into the engine if it fails. But I’m probably over thinking it.

I think water to air is the only way to go with ought having a negative effect on your cooling system. That is if the intercooler radiator is mounted behind the radiator, as in under the tray. Anything hot in front of your Radiater can’t be a good thing.
And a top mount changes the aerodynamics of the vehicle. There has to be low pressure area behind the Radiater for air to want to flow through it. An air scoop would raise the air pressure in the engine bay making the air want flow around the Radiater not through it.
I don’t know if it would be enough to cause any issues but from what I’ve seen is that air hardly flows into the air scoop and in some cases even flows out of it!
But then if the water to air intercooler has a leak that’s also not very nice for the longevity of the engine either!
I’m probably over thinking it but I just can’t decide?!

Air to air top mount with a fan underneath would deliver the outcome you are after. There are some 450mm x 230 mm units around that should fit. Check out the company that advertises here.

If I could fit a fan, I’m sure it would work to cool the intake and getting cooler egts. But it still is increasing air pressure under the bonnet behind the radiator, making the engine make less heat but also causing the engine engines cooling ability be less.
All theory though.

Do you have a snorkel they help a little by not restricting air flow, a larger exaust to get rid of the heat you will also gain a bit of power 2 things to do before adding boost.

Well first thing you should be doing is finding out whats wrong with the cooling system and fix it then worry about mods to improve it
Good point! I agree. I’ve done a few things. Coolant flush- refilled the viscous fan with the proper silicone oil.
It’s not hot weather now so I’m just going to check the thermostat and then wait for summer.
The temp needle only moves under load at speed. The same time when your egts are the hottest.
I don’t think my egts are excessive but I think being intercooled would improve them, also helping with the engine coolant temp.

Some yrs ago I had a 2.4ltr diesel 4runner I use to get it pressure flushed every couple of yrs at a radiator joint as soon as it started running hotter than usual because flushing it at home with the garden hose didn't cut it.

Getting some one to rod the radiator core or a new radiator may be worthwhile noting the age of the vehicle. A thicker core may help now it is running a turbo.

could you not put a bonnet scoop on backwards ? that is with the opening facing the cab , this would then draw air through the motor and out though the scoop past the intercooler ?

260kms, probably more the age with a Radiater. It’s a 97”. Yes you can’t really know the condition of the radiator till you do that.

possibly yes but then your drawing hot air through the cooler, making the intercooler in effective, which already can be an issue with top mounts at the best of time from what I’ve read/heard.
