Buy an old Warn or a new Carbon winch? Thoughts?

So after two years of owning my Discovery 2a, I've finally gone ahead and ordered myself a brand new winch bar from ARB.

Now as if that wasn't a hard enough decision, I have to choose a winch and I need some additional opinions from those who have been in this situation of buying their first winch.

I've considered all other options and essentially ended up with the options of an old Warn XD9000 (or similar), a brand new Carbon 12000 winch or potentially but less like a Road Runner Offroad winch.

Say a half decent Warn is around $550, the Carbon is $900 and so is the RRO.

The Warn has the name and a associated reliability but are they that much more reliable compared to other brands? And how likely are you to find parts for it in the middle of no where or how hard would it be to rebuild one in the outback?

Or should I just get a new Carbon with its 5 year warranty and hope it is worth its dollars?

Have a look in the winch thread at the top of this forum.

@CaptainBanana @2002GU3 @phs I've already been through the winch warranty thread. I actually have the last comment on it at this point in time providing clarification regarding the warranty of the Carbon winch from my own communications with the brand. This is more of a post to get make a decision on what to get based on factors other than the warranty itself especially seeing how a second hand Warn won't have any warranty whatsoever.

@red hilux What's wrong with your mate's Carbon?

@nitrobrent can you elaborate on what makes you say that?

I think the motor blew, sent it into the shop 2 months ago, I dont think he has it back yet

Hi mate
Any chance to get your mate on here with the facts...;)
In the winch warranty thread preferably as Mr Carbon maybe able to help when he gets back on here as there are a few pending questions on the last page anyway....:)

Cheers

My Warn is at least 16 years old.
I pull it apart once every year or so and check everything and grease it.
Stripped a gear a while back , dragging a heavy arse Patrol over a big rock.

Quick google and ordered part from the States. Son bought a second hand Warn.
We pulled it down before installing , like new inside.
Have seen many a winch over the years fail.
Never a Warn.
For my piece of mind , I'm sticking with what I trust.

I had a XD9000
Overall it served me well but they need waterproofing or they will fail if you do river crossings. I had mine rebuilt twice. I coudld have bought new winches.
Based on the top thread I got a Runva

The XD seems to be a bit better regarding breaking down (but did have plenty of issues) its the XP 9.5 onwards thats the shitter breaking down every few months when it saw water...

If you spray the motor with red electro paint and add a breather well mines lasted over 3 years now without maintenance and plenty of water ...Leaving it another year to pull it down just to look...

Surely a quality product like warn would have parts available here and
at a great price. TIC :D

That's the first time I've seen that ..

Im glad you've had a great run out of it because there is nothing worse than losing trust in such an important bit of recovery gear when you go out..

I have the XDC9500 as was told it was more reliable but a little slower retrieval time than the XP which doesn’t worry me.
I think the XP units are more for comp work and need a lot of maintenance

I have decided to head off for a quick run up to the Gulf and Lawn Hill tomorrow so checked my winch today ( haven’t touched it for 6 months ) and it is working fine.

I've had my carbon for a couple of years and use it in anger at least once a quarter. It's been great and I would buy another.
