G'day guys, hoping some one out there can help me, i'm trying to locate Rooftop Maps in a digital form, to run on OxiEplorer. Every map shop I've looked at has them marked as unavailable. Does anyone know where I can get them from.

I use a 10" Acer A200 Android Tablet. I mainly use Ozi Explorer for off road. I have also played around with Androzic a fair bit too. I think Ozi is better, the gui is a bit funny, but it works very well. As for maps, you can use festy maps and also use Open Street Maps which you can convert into Ozi Explorer format using Androzic Mapper. I also save the track data and add it to Open Street Maps and urge everyone to do that, as the maps are free and open source, meaning, you can customize the maps, etc. You can also purchase the Hema maps, which are well worth it.

The pros for Android tablets:
- You have a very cheap and better setup than a Hema HN5
- You can connect a hard drive to it
- You can share or backup photos off your camera
- Open source
- You can get many apps for GPS
- Most are expandable to a further 32gb and you can push them more with an external hard drive.

Cons:
- Black turtle neck wearing apple fans will freak at what you can do with it, without forking out $900 +

I few people in the club have them now, and no one has had any major issues.

Thanks for that Angeloioc, I'm using a Dell XT2 Tablet that I bought off FleeBay for $300. It's brand new still with Dell Warranty till end of next year. So needless to say, I now have to set it up with all the maps off the old laptop.

Cartographics in Adelaide might have a copy (ring rather than internet), next best thing for Vic are Spatial Vision maps for Oziexploer

Hey GQShorty,

Just got a new iPad and have done a little research on this.

Via the "App's" store I purchased the HEMA (4region) set. I have only done a little “on road” testing but they seem to work very well.

The down point is that they are only 1:250,000, so some of the fine detail is missing when you want to zoom in close.

Mud Maps are getting great reviews and there detail is either 1:25,000 or 1:100,00. Again available from the App's store.

If you are going to buy an iPad, make sure you get the 3G/4G version, even if you do intend to use a sim card in it. The 3G/4G versions are the only ones that have the GPS receiver built in.

Cheers

Regarding the Ipad GPS chip. This was true with the Ipad 1 but the Ipad 2 and the new ipad do have a GPS reciever in them in the wifi only models.

no they dont - get the 3g version for a GPS chip else you wont get one

The WIFI ipad2 is only capable of a rough triangulation based on signals from cellular towers and wifi hotspots you might be inrange of (hardly a proper GPS and nowhere near as accurate - and completely useless in the bush with no phone signal)

Should mention the above info is for the ipad2 - no idea about their newer model but my father got bitten assuming Assisted GPS *only* was as good as a proper GPS chip when he bought his wifi ipad2

Hi prawns,

Your right, my stuff up, I was sure it did as I have a new ipad wifi and used it in the high country with bitmap. looks as though it worked with my mobile phone gps as it was tethered at the time. Does this mean that I can use it through the phone GPS (not network but the actual GPS chip in the phone) using tethering?

Cheers, Joel

I did just edit my post at about the same time you were posting I think lol as my post read a little ambiguous - I was referring to ipad2 wifi models only and no idea about the new model -

sorry for the confusion - in the ipad2 wifi model they only have assisted GPS and dont have a actual GPS chip inside - no idea on the new model but you got one so would know :)

edit-
I actually added this to the original post "Should mention the above info is for the ipad2 - no idea about their newer model but my father got bitten assuming Assisted GPS *only* was as good as a proper GPS chip when he bought his wifi ipad2"

just for clarification as it did sound like I was referring to the new model also (sorry Im not thinking straight today - got the sack and then had a old guy unconcious in a car possible stroke that I had to get out and into the fetal position etc call ambos - then had a numpty on the way home jam his brakes on for no apparent reason and I nearly wiped him out - big day for me)

Mate from memory (and I only glanced around as I use a iphone4 which has a proper chip) you might be able to get a bluetooth app so that your ipad can bluetooth link with a gps reciever (eg your phone if it has one) and get actual proper GPS signals that way

Else it triangulates with cellular phone tower signals but if you have no reception that doesnt really work. If i find somthing mate (like a bluetooth app) I will let you know for sure but Im pretty sure ive seen apps for precisely what you want to do

Just made an edit to my post as well, looks as though you were right the only reason it worked was because I happened to have it tethered to my phone at the time. Im sure I didn't have reception at the time so maybe the gps in phone will give the ipad true gps info through the wireless. I will check next time.
Cheers

Tom Tom make a GPS unit for iPad, it's about $100, it will make your WiFi iPad into a GPS capable.

The new iPad or iPad3 (whatever) only has GPS in the cellular capable versions. You do not need a SIM to use the GPS function.

are you sure? I thought the tomtom kit was for iphones and ipods only - Theres plenty of complaints and people pulling them to bits to get them to fit a ipad though?

Okay so I've lashed out and purchased HEMA & Mud Maps. HEMA work very well and has reasonable detail but at the end of the day is 1:250,000.

Only had Mad Maps since early this arvo and the detail between a 1:250,000 and 1:25,000 map is all the difference.

Also Mud Maps downloaded no problems, all map version as stated on the app list.

BUT.....I bought these for a return trip to Cape York and there is no detail on the Cape. Not even the OTL is shown:confused:

So am I missing something or is there a separate map of the Cape that need to buy ?

Any help most appreciated.

I think you can get more detailed maps through 'mudmaps'. I got some detailed maps of the Vic high country through Vicmaps. Google mudmaps and see what u can find. Google is my friend :D
