I don’t know about the best. The hema 4wd app has a 1:150k map of the track plus the desert maps pack which is about 250k odd but with more general info. Looks ok for the area. Screenshot below.

I use both the Exploroz app and Ozi Explorer ( On PC and android) with a large amount of various maps from different providers.

The only real gripe I have so far with the Exploroz app is that it doesn’t show the distance on roads or tracks and I’m not sure yet how to load in old trip logs.

I’ve only used it on a trip up to the Kimberley, but not in any remote locations yet. You’ll need a tablet with a bit of grunt for it to run smoothly, minimum 4gb of ram is required. It’s silky smooth on my Samsung S7 Tablet.

Hema 4WD Maps has great coverage for Madigan.
From other place like the Vic high country, they can be poor for detail.
Hema really covers most of Australia reasonably well.

Mapout has all the Madigan camps and track marked, it a cheap iphone compatible app (used to be free) about $5 I think.
Very good used in conjunction with my Hema maps, as well as old Garmin nav on the dash.

I use them all in conjunction with each other, Mapout zoomed in shows great detail, contour lines, places of interest, but zoomed out they disappear, so you have to juggle it if using it alone.
My old Garmin dash nav I usually leave zoomed out to give relative info for nearby points, like a lake, mountain, and use it to give overall picture of surroundings I can relate to other mapping.

Mapout is what I use to record travels (on the iphone), Hema on an old ipad with glonass module I use just like a paper map, just follow progress on screen map.

Mapout and / or Hema on an ipad mini or regular size, on a dash mount will get you through madigan and all approaches no probs.

I also used Mapout and PocketEarth aswell as OsmAnd on my recent trip and also a dedicated Garmin GPS. All these used in conjunction work well but I also might consider the Hema 4WD App as well to give me a bigger overall view. One of the fellas who is a bit of a wiz in GPS and Apps was using the ExplorOZ app and he never stopped complaining about it. He knows the ins and out of using it and kept telling me the limitations of it, especially when trying to follow a preloaded tracklog that blocks out your own tracklog/breadcrumbs. Other limitations is waypoints, etc. I was keen to get ExplorOZ but after our recent trip, I think I might give it a miss after seeing its limitations and lack of ease to use...
U want something that actually displays the NAME of what your waypoint is and not having to click on the waypoint to find out what the waypoint is. Mapout and Ozi-Explore both do this. U also want flexibility in adjusting preloaded waypoints to a more accurate position once u get on site.

I do not think there is one App that does everything, unfortunately....

Had this in mind as an option, but I don't really know it at all.
Just know of it via the ExplorOz forum, and many use it over there of course.

I can put waypoints onto Mapout and Hema 4WD Maps, plot a rough route on the Hema if I need to be able to make sure I don't miss some obscure turnoff, think I can do that in Mapout too . . .

But mostly I use these like a paper map, just follow the position on the map(s).
I use the tracking feature on Mapout to record travels, and waypoints for good camps etc, as I like the info, route layout on the map, click to reveal info on trips.
It's very easy to use your linked email to upload maps to the list from others breadcrumbs, or upload gpx files to others for them to use.

You're right, not much in the way of a perfect single mapping system, just something to deal with by combining what suits the individual.
