Auxiliary Wiring Advise

Hi All,

I need some advise about auxiliary wiring. I am not (yet!) running an Auxiliary battery, as I have not yet any need...

I have a number of accessories now running direct from the battery, so the positive terminal is really starting to fill up with wiring terminations. Currently there are (apart from the engine feed) spotlights and canopy interior light. I am about to add a 12v outlet in the canopy for a fridge or other accessories, and in the next 12 months possibly an air compressor... Has anyone got any good tips/pics/advise on some sort of auxiliary distribution point to run all these wires from? Obviously, it would be beneficial for me to add another fuse box in the engine bay to clean up this mess also...

Any advise would be great! Thanks :)

What type of vehicle do u have as some already have another fuse area for just that sort of things under the bonnet.

Also, does it have any puters operating systems within the vehicle? Important to know so you can get the correct duel battery solenoid in. Old vehicles can get away with "starter solenoid". New computerized gizmos will need a flash "smart solenoid"!

Hi Nick, before you do anything, you need to set out in detail just what you are planning to do.

You need to know what accessories you are going to install, both now and in the future.

You then have to decide whether these accessories are only going to be used while the motor is running ( like your driving lights ) or if they will need power after the motor is turned off ( like your fridge ) and then can can start to get some idea of what you need in the way of power distribution and there are a number of options from basic power studs to fuse boxes.

Hi frosty, sorry mate but this is just a myth.

No matter what sort of system you use, your onboard computers and all other electronic devises in any vehicle, are already self protected and don’t need any additional help.

I had a look at the narva catalogue a while back and you can get a few different versions of a fused distribution block.. have a look..

NARVA Automotive Lighting & Electrical

check out the "Fuses and fuse accessories" page and go to page 144... there are distribution blocks there that can take 25amps per circuit and 150amps total load... that should see you right with just about anything...

You can install a new fusebox, they are cheap as chips too. just make sure that the wire that goes from the new fuse box to the battery is big enough to handle all the current it may require, then you can move all the other wires to the new fuse box, it also makes the engine bay look much neater.
