Just wondering what people's opinions are, I would like a cruiser as a first rig, preferably turbo diesel and manual, but with my budget (under $10k in South Australia), I can't seem to find any. Do see quite a few petty ones, but not many are manuals, mostly autos.
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on them and if they would good as a first rig (fuel eco, reliability with the box, highway driving)

Cheers,
Hugh

A manual is 2 litres per hundred better on fuel in that car at least. Both can be atrocious if driven hard. I haven’t driven a 1fz auto since I had a new one as my govt issue work car. It had a hard life towing trailers up lonely tracks and beaches to lighthouses. It was a great car as a 4WD.

So slightly worse on fuel than a manual, but if driven kinda easy will be alright on fuel?

They might, they just didn't with me at the wheel. My old manual one which my dad still has gets 16-17 per hundred with an old bloke cruising about in it. "offroad" is way too subjective. The old straight 6 petrol has plenty of torque down low, so if driven accordingly they give surprising results. Dad got the above mentioned manual '80 across the Simpson desert (french line) using 15 litres LESS than my CRD 3.0 auto colorado used and we travelled together. Another time, I pretty much emptied both the main and the auxiliary tanks towing the 19ft Cruisecraft down the beach at Fraser at 1/2 tide when we were ordered off due to a coming cyclone - but at least she had the grunt to do it.

Thats about $23-25 to do 100 kliks. . That is fairly expensive to run. . I thought they did better than that. Off road you would be down to $1 per kilometer or 2. ?
I had an 80 Series petrol manual from new and it fair guzzled fuel on road. Long time ago, but I'm thinking that it averaged around 16 (ish)l/100km overall (city, country mixed) when not towing. When towing you could watch the fuel gauge drop as you drove along. It certainly needed that aux fuel tank...
Robust vehicle, but don't know if I would buy another. You're now talking a 20-ish year old vehicle, I think your fuel economy will be significantly worse than new.

I've been keeping some fuel consumption figures for my 80 since I had the LPG removed and then engine dynotuned -

Bear in mind that my 80 has an aftermarket turbo installed. I reckon that these figures will go up a bit now that I have filled the drawers that were installed the other week.
